RIVERSIDE, Calif. – In a pivotal PacWest series, California Baptist University closed out its matchup with Point Loma with a key victory on Saturday. It was retribution for the Lancers after an extra-inning loss, and delivered yet another conference series victory for the sixth-ranked team in NCAA Division II.
Offensively, the Lancers stepped up to the plate to deliver a 10-5 win in the series finale at Totman Stadium after they dropped a 7-6, 10-inning game earlier. CBU improved to 33-9, 23-5 in conference on the day, while the Sea Lions slid to 24-16, 13-13.
Next week, the Lancers continue their quest for the PacWest championship in Fresno, as they visit the Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific for four games Wednesday to Friday.
Antonio Chavarria and Ryan Williams each went 4-for-8 on Saturday. A.J. David and Mark Sanchez also batted .500 (3-for-6) over both games. David hit two home runs, a double and scored four times, while Sanchez also bashed a dinger and scored three times. Stephen Lohr added a 3-for-8 performance, as well.
In game one, there were two ties and three lead changes. David hit his first home run for a 1-0 CBU lead in the bottom of the first, but Point Loma responded with a four-run fifth to go up 4-1.
The Lancers answered immediately with a five-run fifth on three hits: a Bryce Macy single, RBI single from Lohr and three-run double from Williams, to take a 6-4 edge. The Sea Lions fought back to force extra innings with two runs in the eighth and then won it with another tally in the 10th.
Instead of crumbling, CBU got its offense going right away in the series finale. Once again, David sparked the bats with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first. Point Loma cut within one, 2-1, in the top of the second, but the Lancers scored four more times in the bottom half.
Sanchez hit a solo shot and Sheldon Borson and Brian Ruhm drove in runs with RBI singles, while an error brought home another runner, to make up the rally. CBU capped the scoring with four more in the fourth. Sanchez and Andrew Montoya each singled home runners, while Taylor Wetzel and Jake Gallaway scored the other two with a fielder's choice and sacrifice bunt, respectively.
In the finale, Sanchez batted a perfect 3-for-3 (two RBI, two runs), while David was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs. Montoya also batted 2-for-3 with an RBI to close things out.
Chavarria and Williams were both 3-for-5 in the opener, with Williams driving in three runs. In addition, Lohr batted 2-for-5 with a run scored and driven in during the first game of the day.
