Historic Season Comes to a Close

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – With so little separating California Baptist University and Cal Poly Pomona, there were bound to be fireworks in the NCAA Division II West Regional championship round on Monday.
Unfortunately for the eighth-ranked Lancers, the third-seeded Broncos outlasted an early CBU rally with a late one of their own. Cal Poly Pomona just escaped Totman Stadium with a 7-6 win to repeat as West Region Champions on the heels of a five-run eighth inning that included a grand slam.
Despite a tough ending to the season, it was certainly one to remember for CBU. It won a program-high 42 games — finishing at 42-13 — since it joined the NCAA in 2014. The top-seeded Lancers also won the PacWest Championship, became the first program to host an NCAA postseason event and went further in the NCAA playoffs than they ever had in their previous two appearances.
CBU had its work cut out Monday as it needed to defeat 26th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona (which improved to 40-17) twice in the West Regional championship round on Monday to win the double-elimination tournament. Mark Sanchez (catcher), Ryan Williams (outfield), A.J. David (outfield) and Bryce Macy were all voted to the All-West Region Tournament Team.
Tyson Miller put together a strong start on three days of rest from a 78-pitch outing on Thursday. He went 6.1 innings where he allowed two runs, six hits, three walks and struck out six on 120 pitches.
The power CBU had showed all regional continued in the championship round. The Lancers got on the board first on a leadoff homer from Antonio Chavarria – off a high-inside fastball – in the bottom of the second inning.
CBU strung together five hits in a row in the inning, with Mark Sanchez singling aboard and then scoring on a first-pitch, two-run homer from Ryan Williams. Brian Ruhm kept the rally alive with a single and stolen base, and Sheldon Borson moved him to third with a single to center.
A sacrifice-squeeze bunt from Andrew Montoya scored Ruhm to make it 4-0, and an error scored Borson to cap the inning.
Cal Poly Pomona was not about to go away and scored one run on three hits in the top of the third to make it 5-1. Miller limited the damage, though, with a strikeout leaving the bases loaded. The Broncos added another run on a solo two-out homer from Caleb Romo in the fifth, bringing CPP within three, 5-2.
CBU got some more insurance in the sixth. While power sparked the high-scoring third, it was the opposite this time. The mini-Lancer rally started when Williams beat out an infield single to shortstop to lead things off. He moved to third on a double from Borson and then scored on a single up the middle from Montoya to make it 6-2.
The Broncos would take the lead in the eighth and wouldn't let the Lancers grab a walk-off victory, ending the game 7-6.
