ARCATA, Calif. — After dropping the winners' bracket game 6-2 to top-seeded Humboldt State, California Baptist University found itself against a familiar foe, Chico State, Friday evening. Dating back to last year's postseason, the Lancers owned the head to head with Chico State in the postseason, but this time, the outcome didn't go in the Lancers' favor as the Wildcats put together big innings to win the game 6-0.
It ends CBU's season too soon with a 42-13 overall record, while No. 5-ranked HSU improves to 47-5-1 on the year and Chico State moves to 40-15 after eliminating Sonoma State in the middle game. The Lumberjacks and Wildcats advance to the NCAA Division II West Regional 1 final Saturday.
While the season may have ended too abruptly, the season was one to remember. The Lancers opened the year on an unprecedented six-game run-rule streak and grabbed its longest unbeaten streak since joining the NCAA with 18-straight wins.
Earlier in the day, HSU nearly got on the board first with a deep base hit to left with a runner on first in the top of the third. Jordan Mowatt quickly tracked down the ball and tossed it over to Krista Mann, who turned and hurled it home, where London Miller made the tag to keep the Jacks off the board.
The momentum carried over into CBU's offense as Ali Subia knocked a solo shot over the fence at left to break the scoreless drought in the bottom half of the inning. It was her second home run in as many games, after hitting another solo dinger in the Lancers' win over Chico State Thursday.
Unfortunately, the lead didn't last long as HSU responded with a homer of its own to tie the game at 1-1 in the next inning.
CBU got back its lead, 2-1, in the fourth on back-to-back doubles. Jacque Lopez led off with a double deep to right center and Miller followed by finding the sweet spot and drilling it toward the fence in a similar spot. It was just inches short of a home run, hitting off the top of the fence but bouncing back into play.
Once again, HSU evened the score, 2-2, in the sixth and threatened more by putting the go-ahead run on third. Ashley Coleman got a huge strikeout to put two outs on the board and then got ahead on the next batter (1-2). The next ball was too fast for the Jack as she swung and missed for Coleman's fourth strikeout of the game.
Things took a turn in the top of the seventh, however, as HSU plated four runs to jump ahead 6-2. The Jack defense came up big in the bottom half of the inning, too, to take the game 6-2.
In the knockout nightcap, Chico State loaded the bases in the top of the first, but the Lancer defense made big stops to keep the Wildcats off the board.
Chico State was the first team to break through, scoring three runs in the top of the fifth and three more in the sixth to put some pressure on the Lancers to respond in a big way.
With its back against the wall, down 6-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh, CBU still never quit and kept swinging.
Subia drew ball four to put a runner on with one out, but the Lancers just couldn't get the key hit they were looking for, falling 6-0 to end the season.
