RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Draft dreams continued to be made for California Baptist University on the third and final day of the 2016 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Saturday.
Three more Lancers heard their names called on Saturday, running the program's total drafted to four, tying the most of any Division II program. It tied CBU's record for players drafted in a single season, set back in 2011.
Fresh off three All-American awards and all three NCAA Division II West Region Player of the Year nods, Stephen Lohr was drafted at No. 609 overall by the Texas Rangers in the 20th round on Saturday. The third baseman batted .403 with 32 extra-base hits, 50 runs batted in and 64 more scored as a junior this past season.
Lohr ranked 17th in all of NCAA Division II in doubles this season, with 22 in all. He also ranked 34th in runs, 42nd in on-base percentage (.496), 43rd in total bases (137) and 44th in hits (83).
The Buena Park native brings some versatility to the table, as he played catcher primarily as a sophomore and as an outfielder as a freshman. He came away with at least one award each season, an All-PacWest pick in 2015 and ABCA All-American Gold Glover in 2014.
All the while, Lohr batted .346 with 42 doubles, 125 runs, 120 RBIs and slugged .511 with 300 total bases in his three-year career.
Jeremy McDonald was selected No. 814 by the Washington Nationals in the 27th round on Saturday. The senior left-handed pitcher made a great impact on the Lancers the last two years as a transfer from Stanislaus State, making the All-PacWest team twice and two NCAA Division II All-West Region honors.
The Turlock native amassed 13 wins and the third-best earned-run average in CBU career history at 2.46. It is the lowest career ERA of any Lancer pitcher with at least 110 innings under their belt. McDonald also averaged more than a strikeout an inning as an upperclassmen, with 178 punch outs in 164.2 innings.
As a senior, McDonald posted a 2.14 ERA, which ranked 20th in all of NCAA Division II, an 8-0 record and .237 opposing batting average over 84 innings. It led to him being named to the 2016 All-PacWest first team and two all-region squads.
With an impressive skillset at the plate and behind it, catcher Mark Sanchez went to Kansas City Royals in the 35th round and 1063 overall. The junior made the All-PacWest team this season after batting .323 with 30 runs, 40 runs batted in and 18 extra-base hits. He logged a .985 fielding percentage and caught 17 of 31 would-be base stealers.
A career .313 hitter with a .982 fielding percentage, Sanchez has been consistent force for the Lancers all three years.
Sanchez joins a list of now four Lancer catchers who have been drafted in Sharif Othman, Josh Banda, and Glen Knudsen. Othman, a 2011 draftee, is still in the minor leagues with the Miami Marlins.
