Battling The Cougars

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — California Baptist University had to battle from behind Saturday afternoon, but had to settle for a 1-1 tie at Cal State San Marcos.
"It was a tough game," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "We played really well. It came down to heart and grit and I thought we worked really hard. Playing on the road is hard. I think we're getting better every day, but we need to work more on finishing opportunities."
The Lancers head into PacWest action with a 1-2-1 record, while the Cougars stand 1-0-3 on the young year.
CBU put the pressure on in the first half, out-shooting CSUSM 6-to-2. Jordan Dow gave the Lancers their first good look of the game, but just couldn't quite get it past the Cougar goalkeeper.
Neither team could break through the scoreless barrier until the second half, when CSUSM struck first in the 54th minute.
Down 1-0, the Lancers knew they needed to find an equalizer, but had plenty of time to do it.
It didn't come until the 81st minute, though, as Dow netted her second goal of the season. Miranda Hald and Symone Mack teamed up to get Dow the ball, winning a scramble in the box and allowing Dow to finish it from close range.
Ninety minutes wasn't enough for the two teams, however, as the pair went into extra time looking for a winner.
Hald hoped to be the hero, putting a shot on goal in the 94th minute, but the Cougar goalkeeper once again came up with the save to keep the Lancers out of the net. Two minutes later, Chaylin Couzens fired off a shot, forcing her to once again save the day.
Sara Escobedo kept her team in the game in the 98th minute, denying a Cougar golden goal to force another period of overtime.
In the final 10 minutes, CBU poured it on heavy, but just couldn't find the back of the net to finish the game with the 1-1 draw.
"We dominated, but we're a young team," said St. Clair. "We're learning how to close out games. We're creating really good opportunities, but our finishing needs to be sharper. We're getting there."
The Lancers have a week off before conference action begins on Sept. 22 as CBU hosts defending PacWest Champions Point Loma at 3:00 p.m.
