RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Whenever rival Azusa Pacific comes to town, California Baptist University knows it's going to be a battle. While the Lancers didn't start well, they finished well and had to battle the Cougars for 110 minutes, settling for a 0-0 draw.
The result puts CBU at 2-3-2 overall, 1-0-1 in the PacWest. APU stands 3-3-2 on the year and 1-1-1 in conference.
"We had an uncharacteristic slow start," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "We responded well in the second half and created some dangerous scoring opportunities in overtime. Our defense held well and Sara Escobedo made some tremendous saves."
APU got a chance just 14 minutes into the contest, rattling a shot off the crossbar, but it was CBU that grabbed the first shots on goal of the game.
Chaylin Couzens and Jordan Dow put shots on frame within minutes of one another, forcing the Cougar goalkeeper to make a save to keep the Lancers out of the net in the first half.
In the second half, both teams picked up tempo and Isalei Tauese started a scramble in the box CBU was looking to capitalize on. The senior's shot was blocked but Couzens tried to send the rebound home, once again forcing the APU goalkeeper to get her hands on it.
The Cougars had a corner kick in the 69th minute that created a scare for the Lancers. CBU's defense managed to block one shot and then Escobedo stuffed another to keep the score deadlocked at 0-0.
After 90 minutes wasn't enough, CBU came out fired up in the first overtime period with Couzens putting a shot on goal in the 91st minute. Desarae Felix followed with another look in the 93rd minute, just missing wide of the goal.
It came down to one final 10-minute period, but neither team could find the golden goal to end the game. APU got a dangerous look in the 107th minute, but Escobedo got enough of her glove on the ball to tip it up and over the ball and out of harm's way.
Time ran out, sealing the 0-0 tie.
"We've been battling some injuries and APU is always a tough game," said St. Clair. "APU is a good team. Our execution was much better in the second half and in overtime. We'll learn the lessons from today and start preparing for Concordia on Saturday."
CBU heads out on the road for a length of time, first traveling to Concordia University of Irvine this Saturday before flying out to Hawaii for a four-game swing on two islands. The Lancers return home on Oct. 20 when they host Notre Dame de Namur.
