IRVINE, Calif. — California Baptist University battled, but couldn't come out on top Saturday, falling 2-0 to Concordia University of Irvine.
The Lancers drop to 2-4-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the PacWest, while the Eagles remain unbeaten at 6-0-2, 2-0-1 in conference.
"The game came down to two set pieces," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "I'm proud of how hard the team battled and worked today. CUI is a tough team and this is a tough place to play. We created some dangerous chances, got a bit unlucky on the finishing end. We'll get back to work on Monday and prepare for our Hawaii road trip."
Audrianna DeGraw opened the game strong for the Lancers, firing off a shot on goal just five minutes into the contest. Four minutes later, Desare Felix made the Concordia goalkeeper make another save to keep it 0-0.
The back-and-forth battle continued for the first 45 minutes, putting the two teams into the break in a scoreless deadlock.
Like they started the first half, the Lancers rocketed off the first shot of the second period. Sydney Rockett put her shot on goal, but couldn't sneak it past the Eagle goalkeeper.
In the 54th minute, CUI broke the scoreless drought to take a 1-0 lead.
Still, the Lancers kept fighting, looking for an equalizer. Felix gave CBU another good look in the 60th minute, but the Eagle goalkeeper managed to come up with the save.
Six minutes later, Concordia struck again off a corner kick to take a 2-0 cushion.
With just under 30 minutes left to play, the Lancers hoped to put one in the back of the net, but didn't get their best chances until the last 10 minutes of the game. Jordan Dow just missed high, powering a shot over the crossbar, and Chaylin Couzens' chance was just inches too wide to the left of the goal.
CBU will look to regroup on the road as it heads to Hawaii for four games. The Lancers return home on Oct. 20 as they host Notre Dame de Namur for a 3:00 p.m. kickoff.
