Halverson Wins Big In D-I Field

PHOENIX, Ariz. – For the second time in 23 hours, California Baptist University found itself back in action at the Grand Canyon Invite Saturday.

Christie Halverson won two events against NCAA Division I competition in host Grand Canyon and the University of Nevada Las Vegas. GCU (189-110) and UNLV (201-98) posted wins over the Lancers, as CBU dropped to 2-3 in dual action this year after defeating Claremont-Mudd-Scripps back in Riverside on Friday. Grand Canyon is 7-1 in duals this year, while UNLV is 2-3.

Halverson won both the 1000 and 500-yard freestyles, taking the 1000 in 10 minutes, 18.55 seconds and the 500 in 5:01.61. Her 400-free relay team of Hannah Evans, Grace Oeser and Mackenzie Mergel also took third in 3:40.42 to end the day.

Bre Schlenger took second and fourth on the 1 and 3-meter dives with 245.90 and 232.25 points, respectively. Lauren Skinner took third and sixth at the 1 (199.25) and 3-meter (205.05) boards.

Alena Rumiantceva notched three third-place finishes for CBU in the 100 breast (1:05.83), 200 breast (2:20.48) and 200-medley relay (1:48.19), alongside Andrea Laliena, Evans and Kristina Tchernyshev.

Mergel took third in the 500 free (5:06.62) and 200 free (1:55.19), while Courtney Chacon gave CBU another bronze performance in the 200 butterfly (2:10.58), with Sara Yoshii taking sixth (2:15.36) in the fly.

Laliena and Kylie Mihld were fifth and sixth in the 100 and 200 backs, albeit in rotating orders. Laliena touched came out on top in the 100 back (59.85), with Mihld in sixth (1:00.48), while Mihld (2:09.62) beat out Laliena (2:13.52) in the 200.

Tchernyshev and Coleman took fifth in the 100 fly (58.50) and 100 breast (1:09.57) for the Lancers.

CBU takes a week off to recover from two meets in as many days, returning home for a tri-dual with Concordia and Fresno Pacific on Saturday at noon.
