Battle on the Road

FRESNO, Calif. — In a battle on the road, California Baptist University came up just short with a 1-0 loss at Fresno Pacific on Saturday.
The Lancers drop to 8-4-0 on the year and 6-1-0 in the PacWest with their first conference loss. The Sunbirds improve to 5-6-1 overall, 5-2-0 in conference.
"Game came down to one set piece," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "We created a lot of very good chances, just couldn't capitalize and put them away. We dominated, but came up a bit unlucky on the finishing end. Their keeper made a few good saves."
CBU out-shot FPU 21-to-14 in the game, including an 11-to-3 margin in the first half alone, but just couldn't find the back of the net.
Symone Mack gave the Lancers their first big threat of the night, putting a free kick on frame but the Sunbird goalkeeper made the save to keep it scoreless.
It stayed 0-0 for almost 85 minutes, but it was FPU to break the drought. The Sunbirds drew a foul just outside the 18-yard box and scored off the resulting free kick.
Almost two minutes later, Mariya Fefilova looked like she might find the equalizer, but once again the FPU goalkeeper made the save to hold on to the 1-0 result.
CBU remains on the road, heading to rival Azusa Pacific on Thursday for another game under the lights. The Lancers and PacWest-leading Cougars will kick off at 5:00 p.m.
