AZUSA, Calif. — With the top-two teams facing off Thursday night, there was a lot on the line. California Baptist University came out on top with a 1-0 win on the road at Azusa Pacific to stay on top of the PacWest standings.
The Lancers improve to 9-4-0 overall, 7-1-0 in conference. The Cougars drop to 6-4-2, 6-1-2 in the PacWest.
"It feels good," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "APU is a good team. We knew coming in this would be a difficult battle and we just wanted to focus on what we could control. I think we did a really good job of winning the ball, thinking and playing quickly tonight. It wasn't really a tactical game, it was more about grit. I think the players did a good job rolling up their sleeves and getting to work."
CBU came out firing early, with Jordan Dow hitting the post in just the fourth minute of action.
In the 20th minute, the Lancers struck gold. Dow took the ball down the right side of the field, sending in a cross into the six-yard box. Hoku Afong beat her defender to the ball and redirected the ball into the back of the net with her thigh, 1-0.
"There's a quote that says, 'a dream doesn't become reality through magic," said Afong. "It takes sweat, determination and hard work,' which is what we brought tonight.
Afong looked like she might double her team's lead with 33 minutes left to play, but it just curved wide of the goal.
APU hoped for an equalizer in the 85th minute off a free kick deep in Lancer territory. Sara Escobedo made the save, but the Cougars fouled her into the goal and thought they might have snuck in the goal.
The ref called the foul, however, to keep it 1-0 in favor of the Lancers.
CBU tried to control the final minutes of play, but the Cougars kept pressing, desperate for a goal to send the game into overtime, but the visitors held on to the 1-0 win.
"Desarae Felix was huge," said St. Clair of her midfielder who didn't get much stats, but was all over the Cougars. "Her ball pressure was key for us, her vision was very good. She was just tremendous on both sides of the ball and a key engine for us tonight."
The Lancers remain on the road, but local, heading to Biola on Monday for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff. CBU is back at home on Oct. 26 when it hosts Holy Names at 12:30 p.m.
