Against the Odds

LA MIRADA, Calif. — No. 5-ranked California Baptist University found itself in very foreign territory Monday night, facing a ton of adversity. The Lancers trailed twice during the game and at one point found themselves playing down two men, but rallied to grab a huge 3-2 double overtime victory over Biola, with the golden goal coming from Caley Powers in less than two minutes of stepping onto the pitch.
The Lancers remain undefeated, improving to 12-0-2 on the year, 8-0-1 in the PacWest and moving back into the top spot in the conference standings. The Eagles drop to 5-4-1 overall, 6-7-2 in the PacWest.
"This is a game I'm very conflicted about," said Coach Coe Michaelson. "I'm very disappointed in our lack of composure at times. We need to be able to deal with our frustrations, and this game was full of situations that we have to learn from. On the other hand, the spirit and fight that we showed to get the result against incredible odds was awesome. Even a man down we were in complete control, but down two is something that's difficult to overcome, to say the least. To get two goals at nine men shows the quality we have and for the winner to come from Caley, I couldn't write a better ending. What a hard-working, fantastic teammate, but more importantly a young man of great character. He deserves this memory."
CBU not only outshot Biola 30-to-9 overall, but held a 13-to-2 shots on goal advantage.
Biola got on the board first in the sixth minute of the game, tucking in a rebound from close range.
CBU had chances for an equalizer, including two good looks from Junior Guerra (saved) and Hugo Gutierrez, which hit the post.
It seemed only a matter of time as Preston Judd and Sebastian Wiesbock each put shots on goal in the first half, but it wouldn't come until the 65th minute, despite CBU getting its first red card of the night in the 61st minute.
Daniel Westholm drew a penalty kick when he was fouled in the Eagles' box. Apodaca stepped up to the spot and converted the PK with ease to even things up, 1-1.
Things took a turn for worse in the 82nd minute, when Biola was awarded a PK and CBU was shown its second red card of the night to now play with nine men, compared to the Eagles' 11. Biola converted the penalty to take back its lead, 2-1, hoping they might have secured the game once and for all.
The Lancers weren't done fighting yet, however, and earned themselves another penalty kick in the 86th minute off an Eagle handball in the 18-yard box. Once again, Apodaca finished the PK, giving the Biola goalkeeper no chance, to tie the game up, 2-2.
It forced overtime, where Biola pressured early. The game got on more of an even playing field when the Eagles got a red card in the 96th minute. Judd had a great chance with just a minute and a half left in the first overtime period, but the Eagle goalkeeper made the save to force another 10-minute extra period.
With less than five minutes left before the game resulted in a tie, Powers came up big. He had just been subbed in for the first time just 85 seconds earlier and took off as Abe Placito drove a long ball from just outside the CBU 18-yard box, down to the Biola 18-yard box. Powers sprinted onto it, took a touch past a defender and tucked it home to give the Lancers the 3-2 comeback victory.
The Lancers return to Riverside for their last two guaranteed home games, hosting Holy Names on Thursday and Academy of Art on Saturday, both with 3:00 p.m. kickoffs.
