A Powerful Victory

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Coming off a grueling double-overtime victory, No. 4-ranked California Baptist University knew it wanted to get ahead early Thursday afternoon. The Lancers did just that, grabbing a 4-0 victory over Holy Names in their second of three games in six days.
It keeps CBU's unblemished record intact at 13-0-2 overall, 9-0-1 in the PacWest – sitting first in the conference standings. The Hawks drop to 2-11-1 on the year, 2-6-1 in conference.
"There was a lot of fatigue on the field today for both teams," said Coach Coe Michealson. "We had to deal with suspensions, injured players and sick players, plus the heat coming on, it was a really difficult game to get through. To come out of it with a 4-0 victory, we're happy with it."
The Lancers out-shot the Hawks 19-to-4, holding a 12-to-1 shots on goal upper hand.
Junior Guerra gave CBU its first goal of the game, scoring off his own rebound in the 11th minute of action.
CBU was hungry for more and got an insurance goal in the 29th minute when Daniel Westholm tucked in a shot off an assist from Caley Powers at the far post.
It gave the Lancers a 2-0 lead at halftime, but the home team wasn't satisfied just yet.
In the 80th minute, Powers got on the end of a Sebastian Wiesbock cross to make it a 3-0 game. The duo did it all over again in the 86th minute, with Wiesbock leading Powers in behind the Hawk defense on a through ball, 4-0.
"I've been feeling it for a while," said Powers after scoring his third goal in two games. "I've been biding my time, just waiting for my opportunity and managed to take advantage of them. I always try to bring some energy and hard work."
Aidan Apodaca looked he might score his 26th goal of the season in the 90th minute after getting in behind the Hawk defense. An HNU player took him down from behind, however, to prevent the breakaway and time expired to give CBU the 4-0 victory.
The Lancers have one last guaranteed home game, hosting Academy of Art on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. CBU is looking to finish the last three games of the regular season strong, with a PacWest title still up for grabs.
"We haven't had our whole team available to play for a while now, due to injuries and whatnot," said Michaelson. "We're just hoping to continue to build a rhythm as we head toward the postseason and get all of our players back on the field. We're looking to win these three games since that's the only way we guarantee ourselves the conference championship. Still, we're taking it one game at a time."
