RIVERSIDE, Calif. — In its final home game of the year, California Baptist University put on a show with a 5-0 victory over Academy of Art. It sends off six seniors in style and keeps the Lancers in the mix for the PacWest title.
"Senior day is always a special day," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "We have a great group of seniors who have invested quite a bit into this program during their time at CBU and the team wanted to honor them by their performance today."
CBU sits in first place in the conference standings with an 11-4-1 overall, 9-1-1 PacWest record. The Urban Knights drop to 1-13-1 on the year, 1-9-0 in conference.
"I thought we started and finished well today," said St. Clair. "We wanted to set the tone for the game in the first 20 minutes and we accomplished that. This was our third game in six days so we knew there would be some fatigue, but the team did a great job of focusing on our execution and performance for 90 minutes."
Seniors Sara Escobedo and Victoria Perez combined for the shutout, with Escobedo making three saves in the game. Offensively, CBU out-shot Art U 20-to-3.
"It's been everything I could have ever hoped for in a college experience," said Escobedo on her past four years. "I cannot even say how many moments, memories and teammates that have positively effected my life personally and spiritually. It's so crazy how fast time flies by. It feels like just yesterday that I was a freshman helping the rest of the team prep for senior day, and now all of the sudden I'm the senior being honored. I am so blessed and thankful to have been a part of such an amazing program with amazing coaches who care about us not only as players, but as individuals. These past four years, especially this last and final season, will be something I will absolutely cherish for the rest of my life."
Jordan Dow scored back-to-back goals, finding the back of the net first in the 13th minute. Hoku Afong dribbled down the left side of the field, sent in a cross and Dow volleyed it in out of the air, 1-0.
Less than 10 minutes later, Dow struck again. Haley Wheelon sent a through ball in behind the Knight defense, allowing Dow to run onto it and tuck it away from the top of the 18-yard box, 2-0.
The Lancers got on the board one more time to go into halftime with a 3-0 lead. Wheelon fired off a shot from close range, but the Art U goalkeeper made the save. She couldn't hold onto it, however, and Lanai Navarro took advantage and tapped it in, 3-0.
In the 65th minute, Kyler Clark scored her first goal of the season, putting away a cross from Afong to give CBU a 4-0 lead.
Navarro put the final dagger in with just under 15 minutes left in the game, finding the back of the net on a Miranda Hald cross from close range, 5-0.
Six seniors were honored prior to the game: Escobedo, Perez, Wheelon, Rachelle Felix, Jordanne Laky and Mariya Fefilova.
"I think today was a direct reflection of my career here as well as our season this year," said Wheelon. "It was pure joy and fulfillment of a dream that turned into reality."
CBU hits the road for its final two regular-season games, taking on Dominican on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. and Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday at noon. The Lancers have control of their own destiny, leading the conference by two points after today. Azusa Pacific sits in second (8-5-2, 8-2-2 PacWest) and Fresno Pacific is right there as well (8-6-1, 8-2-0 PacWest).
