ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. – Halfway through the Cal Poly Invitational, Samantha Martirez put herself in position to win an individual title at a primarily NCAA Division I event. The California Baptist University sophomore made that possibility a reality and won her first tournament of the season and second of her career.
"Sam had a great attitude, finished her last four holes off strong and overcame any adversity she faced," Coach Marc Machado said. "I am really proud of Sam for winning the tournament, it's a great thing for her. She shot really well on a really tough golf course, which is great for her confidence."
The 24th-ranked Lancers maintained their third-place standing and improved two strokes in the second and final round, with a 308 completing a 618 (310-308) total in their fall finale tournament at the Cypress Ridge Golf Course. Santa Clara won the team title (598) and host Cal Poly finished in second (607), while the Lancers toppled Division I opponents Cal State Northridge (634) and future Western Athletic Conference foe Bakersfield (641).
"It was good for these girls to get some Division I experience and see they can compete on this level," Machado said. "It is a really good thing for them to have this experience going into the spring and especially going into the 2018-19 season as we transition to Division I."
For the second round in a row, Martirez shot one-over-par 73, which was tops in the 42-player field's second round. It gave her a two-over 146 total (73-73) and the individual crown by one stroke over Santa Clara's Kyleigh Moreno and Marni Murez, who both shot 147.
"You could tell in the practice round and her warm-up sessions on the range she was starting to click, she's been fighting her swing all semester," Machado said. "She played her last four one under in round one and even par the whole tournament, which was outstanding for her on a tough, long course."
Kristyna Abrahamova shot 10 spots up the leader board when she shot 76 in the final round, which was a four-stroke improvement from the opener. She finished in 14th place with a 156 (80-76), while CBU teammate Erica Wang was one stroke and two spots behind. Wang carded a 157 (79-78) after cutting one stroke off her score from one round to the next and finished in 16th.
Jocelyn Chee finished 20th with a 159 (78-81) and scored in both rounds for CBU. Jordan Martin placed 29th as an individual with a 162 total (77-85) after carding the fourth lowest round of any Lancer in the tournament. Sharon Oh ended the tournament in 35th with a 165 (82-83).
CBU now heads into its midseason hiatus, looking to rest and prepare for the spring season.
"We are going to set our sights on getting a little rest, doing some community service and weight training," Machado said. "We are going to try to strengthen the bottom of our lineup so we have a dropped score that we can be proud of, which is something we took pride in all last year."
