Responding to Adversity

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — With its fourth-straight PacWest victory, California Baptist University moved into the conference's top spot Wednesday afternoon.
The Lancers beat Concordia University of Irvine 3-2 in an explosive win, moving to 6-3-0 on the year and 4-0-0 in conference. The Eagles drop to 4-4-1 overall, 3-2-0 in the PacWest.
"I think we started a little flat, but the team did a good job to respond to adversity," said Coach Kristen St. Clair.
Desarae Felix provided two of the Lancers' three goals, with Miranda Hald contributing to the score as well.
Just 10 minutes into the game, CUI scored to take a 1-0 lead. CBU dug deep and responded less than three minutes later with Felix's first goal of the day. Cora Jacoby sent in a long ball to Felix – who was wide open at the top of the 18-yard box – allowing the junior to volley it home, 1-1.
"Everyone kind of stopped, no one was tracking me, and I just put it away," said Felix. "It was such a good ball from Cora."
CBU looked like it might get the go-ahead goal just seven minutes before halftime as Rebecca Romero sent a great ball across the frame of the goal, but there wasn't a Lancer there to get on the end of it.
With less than a minute left in the half, things got interesting. CUI scored with 52 seconds left before the break to go up 2-1, but Hald evened it up once more, 2-2, with 30 seconds remaining in the half. Once again, Jacoby played her attacker in behind the defense after getting a ball from Miranda Martinez, where Hald tapped it in, 2-2.
The excitement continued to build in the second half as the Eagles tried to take the lead once again, but Sara Escobedo made the save.
In the 54th minute, Felix struck again. Hoku Afong send a diagonal ball to Felix, who took a touch past an Eagle defender and slotted it into the back of the net, 3-2.
Jordan Dow hoped to tack on some insurance with under 10 minutes to go, but the Concordia goalkeeper made the save.
CBU ran out the clock to preserve its fifth-straight win on the year and move into first place in the PacWest standings. The Lancers will look to keep things building as they host Point Loma on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. matchup.
"Our team has been on a roll," said Felix. "We've been working so hard and I'm so proud of them.
