A Fiery Finish

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Looking to stay hot, California Baptist University grabbed an explosive 4-0 victory over Chaminade Thursday afternoon.
The Lancers improve to 8-3-0 overall and remain perfect in PacWest play with a 6-0-0 mark. The Silverswords drop to 3-7-0, 2-5-0 in conference with the loss.
"We're getting better every day," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "Each game we want to continue to focus on the aspects of the game we can control, our work rate, execution and performance. Today was a good complete team performance."
She only had to make one save in the game, but Sara Escobedo held onto her 23rd career shutout to become the all-time clean sheets leader in program history. She also owns the all-time saves record, which she broke earlier this year at Concordia University of Portland.
"I never knew this was a possibility for me when I started playing college soccer," said Escobedo. "It's absolutely mind-blowing to have all of this happen, the saves record and now this. I couldn't be happier."
CBU out-shot Chaminade 22-to-3, putting nine of those shots on goal and seeing three different Lancers score goals in the victory.
"We're getting sharper around the goal and the goals scored today reflect that," said St. Clair. "Defensively, we're getting sharper as well."
The first goal came in the 21st minute when Haley Wheelon collected a defensive clear, took a touch forward and fired off a half-volley shot from 25 yards out, 1-0.
Less than five minutes later, CBU struck again. Rebecca Romero took the ball down the left side of the field to the end line and sent a byline pass across the face of the goal. Miranda Martinez ran onto the ball and tapped it into the far netting to extend the Lancers' lead to 2-0.
In a déjà vu moment, Mariya Fefilova got the ball to Romero, who once again laid off a byline pass, this time finding Lanai Navarro on the end of it. Navarro had a defender on her, but tucked it into the back of the net in the 31st minute, 3-0.
CBU wasn't done yet, added a fourth goal less than 90 seconds later. Cora Jacoby got into the Silversword defensive third and drove a cross into the 18-yard box. From only six yards out, Martinez volleyed it up and over the Chaminade goalkeeper for her second goal of the game, 4-0.
Despite the fiery first half, the Silverswords wouldn't let the Lancers get another goal to seal the 4-0 victory for the home team – its seventh-straight win.
CBU will look to keep momentum building as it takes on Fresno Pacific on Saturday. The Lancers and Sunbirds are scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. kick off time in Fresno.
"I'm very pleased with the team's performance today and tomorrow we'll go back to work to prepare for our next game at FPU," said St. Clair.
