Off to a Flying Start

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Just 25 seconds into Saturday's game, California Baptist University found the back of the net and held on for a 2-1 victory to keep its first-place standing in the PacWest.
The Lancers improve to 7-3-0 overall and remain perfect in conference with a 5-0-0 mark. The Sea Lions drop to 3-5-1 on the year, 2-3-0 in the PacWest.
Jordan Dow provided the explosive start, scoring with her back to the goal by kicking the ball over her shoulder and into the side netting, 1-0.
The Lancers had more looks in the first half, but went into halftime with the one-goal lead. Miranda Martinez and Michaela Miller had back-to-back saved shots in the 30th and 31st minutes of play, respectively.
Hoku Afong extended the Lancers' lead to 2-0 in the 62nd minute with her first goal of the season. After CBU drew a foul about 25 yards out, Afong fired off a left-footed shot into the far post to double her team's upper hand.
It paid off after the Sea Lions struck in the 72nd minute off their own free kick.
CBU ran out the clock in the final four minutes to secure the 2-1 win and remain on top of the PacWest standings.
The Lancers continue at home for one more game, hosting Chaminade on Thursday at 1 p.m., before heading to Fresno Pacific next Saturday for a 5:00 p.m. kick off.
