RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Staying hot from a successful opening weekend, No. 14-ranked California Baptist University put on a show with a 107-70 victory over Colorado Christian Wednesday night.
It moves the Lancers to 3-0, while the Cougars drop to 0-4.
CBU shot lights out with a 63.9 shooting percentage and saw five Lancers finish the night in double figures. Gabe Taylor (8-of-10) and Jordan Heading (6-of-11) each posted 20 points, while De'jon Davis finished the night with a career-high 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting, while fellow post Kaldiou Diouf chipped in 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Matt Hubbard rounded out the quintet with 11 points (4-of-5).
Jason Todd helped move the ball for the Lancers, finishing with a career-high six assists, while Heading dished out six assists on the night – just one under his career high.
For the third night in a row, CBU dominated the glass, out-rebounding CCU 37-to-22 for a +15 margin. Bul Kuol led the rebounding effort, finishing with eight boards, while Davis snagged five. Going into the game, the Lancers boasted the second-best rebounding margin in Division II with an 18.5 margin.
The game was only tied for the first 14 seconds of the game until Diouf laid in the first two points of the night. CBU never surrendered that lead and went into halftime boasting a 12-point advantage, 48-36.
CBU exploded on offense in the second half. The Lancers shot a staggering 73.3-percent (22-for-30) and didn't miss a single free throw in the frame.
After CCU hit a three to put the score within 15, CBU scored 11 unanswered points to extend its lead to 26 points. Taylor really put momentum in CBU's favor during the run after he stole the ball away, gave a quick pass over to Todd and dunked in the alley-oop pass.
CBU teetered on the edge of a 30-point lead but it didn't come until seven and a half minutes were left on the clock, 85-55. From there, the Cougars tried to maintain and keep the Lancers at bay, but there was no stopping the home team.
Heading down the stretch, CCU pulled within 31 (92-61), but two free throw shots from Ty Rowell all but sealed the deal, giving CBU its highest lead of the night at 40 points. The Cougars managed to hit an and-one before time expired, however, to finalize the 107-70 result.
CBU is back in action on Saturday, hosting UC San Diego – which is receiving votes in the NABC Coaches' Poll – at 7:00 p.m.
