SAN DIEGO – A strong finish to all four quarters and a balanced offense, including 45 bench points, led California Baptist University to a dominant 84-59 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills at the Point Loma Thanksgiving Classic on Friday.
True freshman Georgia Dale led the Lancers with a career-high 22 points on 70-percent shooting (7-for-10 overall, 3-5 from three) and perfect 5-for-5 shooting from the free-throw line. Three other Lancers scored in double figures, with Emily Schmidt putting in 14 in the start. Tori Mitchell and Blaysen Varnadoe both scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds, as CBU improved to 2-4 and the Toros dropped to 3-3.
"It was really nice to see Georgia get going and Emily did a solid job making plays on defense and running the floor," Coach Jarrod Olson said.
CBU plays again in the PLNU Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday at noon against Cal State Los Angeles. The Lancers will look to replicate their ball movement after a season-high 22 assist output, 17-11 edge in turnovers and 18 points off turnovers and on the fast break. Akayla Hackson and Ane Olaeta notched six and five assists, respectively.
Hackson did a bit of everything with seven points, three steals and a block, while Olaeta added six points, five rebounds, a block and steal. Schmidt also finished with four assists, three rebounds, a block and steal, while Dale chipped in four rebounds, three assists and a steal.
"It was a real team effort today," said Olson, whose team had a 45-15 advantage in bench points. "We did a good job setting the tone with our defense in the first quarter and our bench did an outstanding job today."
Both teams started out neck and neck, with ties at two, four and six in the first three minutes. The Lancers ended the first quarter on a 19-8 run once Dale, Hackson and Varnadoe were subbed into the game, to take a 25-14 lead. CBU hit three of its eight three-pointers in that run, with Dale making two and Schmidt nailing another and Varnadoe adding two more field goals.
CSUDH fought back and tied the game twice in the second quarter. The Lancers closed out the half on a 7-0 run on a three from Hackson, two Dale free throws and a layup from Mitchell.
It was another strong finish to the third quarter, with the Lancers closing it out on a 16-3 run to take a 17-point lead, 64-47, into the fourth. Dale scored 10 points in that span, including the first five points, to help put the game away.
CBU would run its lead all the way up to 25, 84-59, by the end of the game after a converted an and-one play from Schmidt.
