RIVERSIDE, Calif. – No records were safe at the Lancer Aquatics Center on day two of the Lancer Swim Dive Invitational on Saturday. California Baptist University broke five pool records before taking second in the Invite.
The Lancers compiled 1,143.5 points in the five-team event, with Fresno Pacific getting the slight edge (1,561.5) and Concordia University of Irvine coming in third (449). CBU goes into Christmas break before returning on Jan. 5th for a home dual with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at noon.
Sofia Petrenko took down two more individual Lancer records with CBU, as the senior transfer won the 200-yard butterfly in two minutes, 0.86 seconds and 400 individual medley in 4:25.71. Both were pool records and NCAA Division II Championship consideration times, with her fly time coming close to the automatic cut (1:59.37), while also breaking the oldest record still standing in CBU's history (2:01.33), which was set by Gennifer Amthor in 2001.
Runner-up Bavindeep Basra of Fresno Pacific clocked in almost 10 seconds after Petrenko (4:34.89) in the 400 IM, while CBU's Emily Longfellow (4:37.16) and Melody Coleman (4:39.85) took third and sixth, respectively, in the event.
On the 800-free relay, Petrenko updated another Lancer Aquatics Center record with Grace Oeser, Christie Halverson and Mackenzie Mergel. Their time of 7:35.85 shattered the previous pool best of 7:49.71 set by UC San Diego in the 2011-12 season. CBU's Alex Wolf, Andrea Laliena, Ariahn Givens and Longfellow also took fourth in the 800-free relay (8:01.33).
Emily Dunkerson won the 3-meter springboard with 429.60 points and took second on the 1-meter (413.40).
"Emily continues her winning streak, she beat out Kelsey Vreeman of CMU, who took sixth place on three-meter at D-II National last year," Dive Coach Jeff Couto said. "Dunkerson has an incredible work ethic and continues to get better every day. If she continues at this rate, the sky is the limit."
Halverson also posted a B cut in the 200 free, winning it in 1:51.72, while Oeser took third (1:55.08) and Mergel touched in fourth (1:55.13). Halverson also broke CBU's pool record in the 1650 free (17:16.17) and 200 back (2:05.38). She still took second in both races, with a 17:31.32 in 1650 free and 2:40.10 in the 200 back.
Laliena, Robin Smallwood, Petrenko and Hannah Parson also took second in the 200-medley relay (1:46.54), behind a record-setting effort from Fresno Pacific (1:43.76). Petrenko, Oeser, Halverson and Parson then took second in the 400-free relay (3:31.03) to end the weekend.
There was another medal finish for Alex Wolf in the 200 breast, as she took third in 2:20.80, with Smallwood taking seventh (2:29.03) in the race.
The Lancers also had four swimmers in the top eight of the 1650 free, with Mergel taking fourth (17:47.60), Oeser in fifth (17:49.43) and Tessa Olson seventh (17:55.11). Laliena (2:09.58) and Kylie Morrison (2:15.50) took fourth and seventh in the 200 back, respectively.
Parson finished fourth in the 100 free (53.98), while Oeser (54.92) and Jenna Washburn (55.51) took sixth and eighth, respectively. Longfellow took fifth in the 100 IM (1:02.04), while Taylor Dowden came in eighth (1:03.71). Anna Peter also took seventh in the 200 fly (2:14.15) and eighth in the 100 fly (1:01.52).
