REDLANDS, Calif. – Coming off of a restful off week last week, No. 25-ranked California Baptist made a splash Thursday on the road in two games. The Lancers settled for a split, dropping an 11-5 loss to No. 22 Cal State Northridge, but defeating the University of Redlands 17-7 in the nightcap.
The Lancers sit 5-5 on the year, while CSUN improves to 7-9 overall and Redlands opens the year at 0-2.
Current CBU leading scorer Paizlee Dreyer started the offense early in game one, scoring a goal less than a minute into the first quarter.
The Matadors quickly responded, however, with three goals of their own shortly after, making the score 3-1 with 2:40 left in the first. Five seconds later, Abi Auer found the back of the cage, bringing her team within one before a Matador goal ended the first quarter with the Lancers trailing 4-2.
Jessica Castellano looked to start another early offensive spark for the Lancers in the second period, scoring within the first minute on a 6-on-5 power play, making the game 4-3.
Unfortunately, that was as close as the Lancers would get, with the Matadors scoring another four goals in the frame to make the score 8-3 at halftime.
The third quarter proved to be all about defense, with no goals being scored by either team until Valerie Spezzaferri netted a goal with 4:07 left in the third. CSUN responded quickly on a power play, holding a 9-4 advantage heading into the fourth.
The Matadors held on and outscored the Lancers 2-1 in the final period to take the win, 11-5.
CBU didn't waste any time wallowing with a quick turnaround and positively responded to the loss, crushing Redlands 17-7 only a few hours later.
The Lancers came out with an alarming offensive frenzy, scoring eight goals in the first quarter – two each from Lizette Perez, Auer, and Spezzaferri, while Annie Eubanks and Katie Quon also got in on the action, scoring one apiece. The Lancer defense proved to be just as strong, with redshirt senior goalie Lina Medeiros posting a shutout in the first quarter to give the Lancers an 8-0 upper hand.
Redlands responded with two goals in the second, but CBU added to its lead with goals from Dreyer, Madelena Meza, and Eubanks to head into the break with an 11-2 lead.
The Lancers kept momentum building with two quick goals from Pua Wong and Dreyer in the third before the Bulldogs were able to respond with a goal. Meza answered right back with another, however, increasing the Lancers' lead to 14-3.
Redlands fought back in the end of the third with another goal, but it would not be enough to catch the Lancers, who added three more goals in the fourth from Eubanks, Amy Bideshi, and Madison Gonzales to capture the 17-7 victory.
CBU returns home to the Lancer Aquatics Center this Saturday, taking on No. 17-ranked UC San Diego at 12 p.m.
