BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — To close out the Indiana Invitational, No. 25-ranked California Baptist University grabbed a 17-4 win over Carthage College, but dropped a 13-6 loss to host No. 14-ranked Indiana.
The Lancers sit 7-7 on the year, while IU improves to 7-2 and Carthage moves to 1-1.
Eleven Lancers scored in the opener, with Paizlee Dreyer leading the charge with four goals. Abi Auer, Jaclyn Myers and Jessica Castellano each contributed two goals, while Lizette Perez, Madelena Meza, Annie Eubanks, Madison Gonzalez, Chase Kelly, Allie Coleman and Emily Cardona also scored for CBU.
The Lancers opened on a 6-0 run against the Lady Reds and never looked back. Castellano started the spurt, leading to a 9-3 CBU advantage after the first period.
It didn't stop from there as the Lancers kept momentum in their favor with five unanswered goals in the second to boast a 14-3 lead at halftime.
CBU would only allow one more Carthage goal, coming in the third, to coast to the 17-4 victory.
In the nightcap, the Lancers battled from a 4-0 deficit in the first quarter, but matched the Hoosiers in the second (2-2) and (4-4).
Perez found the back of the cage first for CBU with six minutes left in the frame. Castellano also scored in the quarter, but the Lancers found themselves trailing 6-2 at halftime.
Eubanks scored an unassisted goal with three minutes left in the third, sparking a 4-2 run for the Lancers. Castellano and Coleman netted back-to-back goals, before Perez scored in the final six seconds of the frame to put CBU within 10-6 heading into the final period.
CBU couldn't come closer, however, as IU took the game 13-6.
The Lancers head to the Claremont Convergence next week for four games, two on Friday and two on Saturday.
