Shutting Out the Argos

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Despite the season winding down, No. 20-ranked California Baptist University doesn't seem to be slowing down and picked up two shutout victories over Notre Dame de Namur Tuesday night, 9-0 (five innings) and 3-0.
The Lancers improve to 32-7 overall, 24-2 in the PacWest and extend their NCAA-era program-best win streak to 24-straight games. The Argonauts drop to 8-27 on the year, 8-16 in conference.
Like it did the day before, CBU wasted no time and jumped out in front to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Krista Mann led the frame off with a base hit up the middle and came home on a Caitlyn Lloyd double. Soraya Shahbazian then drilled a no-doubter over the fence at center to make it 3-0 without any outs.
The Lancers put two more runners on, but couldn't send them home as the Argonauts ended the inning trailing 3-0.
CBU kept rolling in the second, plating five runs on five hits. Alley Johnson led the inning off with a single through the left side and proceeded to steal second. Mann joined her on base and Lloyd drove in one run with an infield single, before Mann came home on a groundout, 5-0.
Back-to-back RBI doubles from London Miller and Brittany Galvez gave CBU a 7-0 lead. Hannah Thieroff gave the Lancers the eight-run threshold, tucking an RBI single down the left field line before NDNU could get out of the inning.
With the mercy-rule in play, CBU's defense looked to keep its shutout intact while its offense kept hot at the plate. Kellye Springstead kept her dominant play in the circle, not allowing a hit to the Argos until the fourth.
The Lancers tacked on some more runs in the third as Johnson tagged up on a sacrifice fly, 9-0, to take their third-straight run-rule victory over the Argos.
In the nightcap, NDNU managed to keep CBU off balance for the opening innings, not allowing the Lancers to put a run on the board until the bottom of the fourth. Miller broke the scoreless streak with a solo shot to left center, giving the Lancers a dangerous 1-0 lead.
Galvez gave CBU some insurance in the sixth, blasting a homer of her own with Diana Gomez on base, putting the Lancers up 3-0.
Ciara Stapp and her defense kept the Argos off the board in the top of the seventh, securing their 24th-consecutive win.
The Lancers will look to stay hot as they take a break from conference, heading to Cal State Dominguez Hills for a doubleheader on Thursday, starting at 1:00 p.m. CBU returns to Funk Stadium on Saturday, hosting rival Azusa Pacific for a pair of games, beginning at noon.
