RIVERSIDE, Calif. – For the second time in six days, California Baptist University matched its season high for hits in a game in an 11-4 series-opening win over Hawai'i Hilo Wednesday night at Totman Stadium.
Ryan Williams led the Lancers' 16-hit performance with a 4-for-4 night at the plate that included three runs, a run batted in and a double, while five others had two hits for CBU and a total of eight players logged a base hit for the home team. CBU improved its record to 28-15 overall, 19-10 in the PacWest and the Vulcans dropped to 8-21, 8-19, with the series continuing Thursday at 6 p.m.
"A lot of guys are stepping up," Williams said. "We have a lot of freshman calming down and playing up to their ability. It's fun to watch them and we feed off their energy."
Brian Ruhm went 2-for-2 with two doubles, a run scored and RBI. Luke Navigato batted 2-for-4, with two runs and an RBI. John Glenn (three RBIs, run, double); Tommy Bell (two runs, two doubles, RBI) and DJ Porter (two RBIs, run, double) were all 2-for-5 in the game for CBU.
"We had to get out and get on them early," Navigato said. "We are in the playoff push right now, so we're doing whatever we can to give ourselves a chance to get into the postseason.
"This team has shown a lot of resilience this year, and we just have to keep that going."
On the mound, Andrew Bernstein threw a personal-best 7.1 innings in his third start of the year. He allowed eight hits, one walk, three earned runs and struck out five on the night. Brody Robinson threw the final 1.2 innings, allowing one hit, a walk and no runs to close out the game.
A trio of doubles from Williams, Bell and Ruhm put CBU ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning. The Lancers would score the rest of their nine runs over the next three innings.
A walk to Williams and singles from Navigato and Glenn (RBI) produced the Lancers' third run in the third. They were far from done, as an error brought in the fourth tally and a double to dead center from Porter made it 6-0 in favor of CBU.
"We're playing to our park, we've noticed the wind has been blowing out the last few games," Williams said of CBU's recent power surge, with the team slugging .547 over the last five games. "We can swing the bats, so we should, not that we're going for the home run, but we are playing to our strengths."
In the fourth, Glenn laced a two-out double down the right-field line to score Navigato and Williams, who had singled aboard earlier for an 8-2 cushion for the Lancers.
CBU put its first four runners on in the fifth, with Porter, Alfredo Rodriguez and Nick Plaia each singling on and Ruhm drawing a walk. The Rodriguez single scored Porter and a sacrifice fly from Navigato brought in Ruhm before Williams plated Rodriguez with a line-drive single to center.
Bernstein took a no-hitter into the fourth inning, with an error giving the Vulcans their only base runner up to that point. The junior retired the leadoff batter in six of the eight innings he started on the mound.
