Lancers Battle With the Cougars

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — It came down to the final 30 seconds, but Cal State San Marcos managed to sneak one away from California Baptist University Thursday afternoon.
The Lancers drop to 0-2-0 on the year, while the Cougars improve to 2-1-0.
"Soccer is a cruel game sometimes," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "We had some tremendous attacking opportunities, just got a little unlucky on the finishing and their goalkeeper made some really great saves. It's heartbreaking to lose like this, but we have to put away our chances and finish for 90 minutes."
Defender Mariya Fefilova tried to spark the Lancer defense early, just missing high on a header off a corner kick in the second minute of action.
The Lancers got their best chance of the half in the 28th minute as Jordan Dow forced the Cougar goalkeeper to make a save from point-blank distance. Desarae Felix then fired off another shot off the rebound, but the keeper managed to stop it once more.
Sara Escobedo kept her team in the game in the 49th minute, coming deep off her line to snatch a free ball off a Cougar's head to not allow CSUSM to get a shot off the free kick. Escobedo finished with four saves in the game.
CBU almost found the back of the net just minutes later off a shot from Hoku Afong in the 52nd minute. The junior transfer ripped a shot from distance, but it was tipped out of danger.
As the clock hit the one-minute mark, it looked like the game might be headed into overtime. CSUSM had other ideas, however, and took advantage of a free kick in Lancer territory to score with less than 30 seconds left in the game.
Time expired before the Lancers could find an equalizer, settling for the 1-0 loss.
CBU hits the road for three games to close out its non-conference portion of the season, starting with Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
"We'll learn our lessons from today, get back to work and get ready for CPP on Saturday," said St. Clair.
