ASU BOX SCORE
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Three games into the season, defense has shown to be California Baptist University's strength. It was on display on day two of the 2018 campaign, as the 25th-ranked Lancers battled with two top-20 ranked teams.
CBU's goalies have logged 10 or more saves in all three games of the season so far after its defense held No. 19 UC Santa Barbara to eight goals in an 8-3 loss and then limited fifth-ranked Arizona State to a 12-3 game Saturday.
For the second game in a row, Grace Ramirez logged double-digit saves with 12 blocks and two steals against UCSB. Megan Rocha made her first start of the season against the Sun Devils and logged 10 saves.
The Lancers open the season at 0-3, with their first three games coming against top-ranked competition, while UCSB and Arizona State start the year 1-0. CBU makes its home opener with the CBU Mini on Saturday when it will face second-ranked USC at 12:45 p.m. and Chapman at 7 p.m.
Jaclyn Myers scored in both games, while Lizette Perez finished with a team-high five points on the day, with two goals versus ASU and an assist and steal against the Gauchos. Pua Wong and Kira O'Donell also scored in CBU's loss to UCSB.
The Gauchos jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the game, but O'Donell got CBU on the board with eight seconds left in the first quarter. UCSB tallied one more goal in the final second of the quarter.
The Lancers played their best in the second quarter, shutting out their opponent, while Myers' six-on-five goal off a Perez pass made it a 4-2 deficit at halftime.
Wong scored halfway through the third quarter to keep CBU within two goals of UCSB, but the home team scratched out a few more goals in the final few minutes to preserve the win.
CBU got out to a good start with Arizona State, surrendering the first two goals before Myers answered back on a powerplay to make it a one-goal deficit, 2-1, after one quarter of play. The Lancers put together an impressive fourth quarter, as well, with both Perez goals coming in that span.
