SAN DIEGO — Both California Baptist University and Point Loma came in with momentum Friday night, but it was the Lancers who stayed hot with an 85-58 win on the road.
CBU improves to 12-2 overall, 5-1 in the PacWest with its sixth-straight victory. The Sea Lions drop to 10-6 on the year, 4-3 in conference, and see their four-game unbeaten streak snapped.
Five Lancers finished the night in double figures, led by Jordan Heading (7-for-13) with 19 points. Kalidou Diouf followed with 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting, while Ty Rowell (5-of-11) chipped in a career-high 15 points. De'jon Davis (5-for-7) added 14 points and Jason Todd (5-for-8) rounded out the quintet with 12 points.
CBU moved the ball around well with Heading dishing out a career-high nine assists and both Todd and Diouf finishing with three. Off the glass, the Lancers out-rebounded the Sea Lions 31-to-29, with Todd leading with six boards.
The Lancer defense came out on full force, grabbing two shot clock violation turnovers just two minutes into the game. It helped CBU build up a 10-2 lead early with Heading scoring eight-straight points on his own to open the charge.
Point Loma tried to keep pace, pulling within six with eight minutes left before halftime, but the Lancers responded on another run, scoring three-straight triples to grab some separation. Todd sparked the spurt with back-to-back treys, before Davis hit his first three-pointer of his collegiate career, 29-14.
In the first half alone, CBU shot at 43.8-percent, including 50-percent from beyond the arc to go into halftime with a 40-24 lead.
CBU came out of the break looking to build on its hot shooting and scored on back-to-back possessions to build its lead up to 21 points, 45-24. Diouf rattled in a jumper to start the half and Heading drained a triple to give his team the cushion.
The Sea Lions managed to chip away at the lead and cut the deficit down to 13 points, 55-42, almost halfway into the second frame.
Once again, however, the Lancer defense grabbed stops to build the visitors' lead back up into 20-point territory, 63-42, off a Gabe Taylor layup.
Heading down the stretch with a 78-53 lead, CBU kept its composure despite the Sea Lions drawing fouls. The free throws didn't fall for Point Loma, however, and the Lancers boxed out to keep the home team from getting more looks and keep their distance.
Bul Kuol all but sealed the deal with a layup just after the one-minute mark and Micah Robinson stole the ball away on the Sea Lions' next possession to secure the 85-58 victory.
CBU doesn't get much time to turn around, heading to Dixie State for a Monday night matchup. The Lancers and Trailblazers tip off at 6:30 p.m. Pacific.
