Lancers Battle with Roadrunners

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Both teams had something to fight for Friday afternoon as California Baptist University hosted CSU Bakersfield. The Roadrunners managed to get the much-needed points, however, grabbing a 1-0 victory over the Lancers.
"I think we played well enough for the win today," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "We created some good, dangerous scoring opportunities, outshot them and dominated a large majority of the game, but unfortunately, the ball didn't bounce our way today."
CBU drops to 11-4-1 overall, 4-3-0 in the Western Athletic Conference, while Bakersfield – which is fighting for a spot in the WAC Conference Tournament – improves to 5-10-0 on the year and 2-4-0 in conference.
Just five minutes before halftime, the Lancers looked like they would get the upper hand. Ari Coronado sent a dangerous cross into the box, where Jordan Padgett one-touched her shot on frame, but it hit the crossbar to send the teams into halftime with a scoreless draw.
It was the Roadrunners who broke the tie in the 56th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
The Lancers kept fighting, however, and thought they had the equalizer in the 64th minute, but Rebecca Romero's shot was just inches too high and connected with the crossbar once again.
Unfortunately, time ran out before CBU could find the back of the net, conceding the 1-0 result.
"Soccer can be a cruel game sometimes and I think we recognize we missed a good opportunity [to get the three points]," said St. Clair. "While we're disappointed, we must now turn our focus and preparation for Sunday, which will be another challenging road game. We need to focus on the aspects of the game we can control – the intangibles that make us successful – and be sharp on our execution."
The Lancers have a quick turnaround as they head to The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley for one last road trip, playing the Vaqueros on Sunday at noon Pacific. CBU then closes out its inaugural NCAA Division I season the following week, hosting Montana for a non-conference matchup on Oct. 26 at 3 p.m.
