EDINBURG, Tex. — In its final Western Athletic Conference game of the year, California Baptist University faced a tough squad from The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, but dropped a 1-0 loss.
The Lancers close out their inaugural season in the WAC with a 4-4-0 conference record, guaranteeing a top-five conference finish, surpassing their preseason prediction of an eighth-place finish. CBU also boasts an 11-5-1 overall record on the year, while the Vaqueros improve to 11-5-2 on the year, 5-1-1 in the WAC.
"Today, we needed to be much more clinical in our finishing," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "As our conference season ends, it's clear to me that our players have done everything we have asked for and given us 100-percent in our inaugural NCAA Division I season."
CBU created chances offensively, but got a little unlucky in the finishing third.
After the two teams went into halftime in a scoreless draw, Jordan Dow looked like she might break through in the 68th minute with a chance at the top of the box, but a Vaquero defender stepped in front to block the shot.
Eight minutes later, Jordan Padgett had a look from close range, but it just went wide.
Unfortunately, UTRGV struck in the 85th minute to take a 1-0 lead and held on for the one-goal victory.
"It's very difficult to lose in the 85th minute," said St. Clair. "Our players worked very hard, and deserved more, against a conference opponent who will finish in the top-two spots."
The Lancers return home for one last game of their first DI season, hoping to close it out with a bang. CBU hosts the University of Montana on Friday at 3 p.m. for a non-conference matchup. The Lancers will honor eight seniors prior to kickoff: Sydney Rockett, Lanai Navarro, Miranda Martinez, Kyler Clark, Brooke Ligtenberg, Christen Engel, Desarae Felix and Carissa Christensen.
"In our final match against Montana on Friday, I want to win and send our seniors off in style," said St. Clair. "They have been the cornerstone of much of our success over the past few years and we owe them so much."
