CLAREMONT, Calif. – Logan Mena scored four times in both of California Baptist University's games at the Gary Troyer Tournament on Saturday, leading the Lancers to a 10-9 overtime win over Fordham and a close 14-11 loss to Navy.
The 14th-ranked Lancers end the weekend with a 12-9 record. Fordham drops to 6-12 this season, while Navy improves to 11-7. CBU plays just one game next week, with a non-conference contest at Concordia University of Irvine on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.
Down 6-4 going into the fourth quarter in the nightcap, Mena, Dominick Nevarez and Zach Lowery scored three-straight goals for the Lancers to take a 7-6 lead with two minutes, 42 seconds left in regulation. Fordham answered back about 30 seconds later, and both teams were held scoreless the rest of the way to force overtime.
The Rams scored first in both overtime sessions to take a 9-8 lead in the final 1:39. Mena tied the game 16 seconds later and Kyle Rasmuseen netted the winner with 14 seconds left to deliver the win.
CBU dropped the morning game to Navy, 14-11, with Mena scoring four goals again. Both teams matched each other goal for goal in the first quarter. Mena scored with 12 seconds left in the first quarter to make it a 3-3 game going into the second quarter.
Navy then won the second quarter, 4-2, for a 7-5 halftime lead, despite two more goals from Mena. Scores from Tanner Shore, PJ McDonough and Mena did not help the Lancers gain any ground on Navy, as it scored three times, as well, to go into the fourth up 10-8.
The Lancers fought back, with goals from Shore, Hunter Barnett and Christian Britton in the fourth quarter but fell short in the end.
