RIVERSIDE, Calif. – After trailing the entire game, California Baptist University completed a wild comeback and three-run bottom of the ninth inning for a 5-4, walk-off win over Colorado Christian on Friday night at Totman Stadium.
A two-run homer from John Glenn got the Lancers in the game in the seventh, while Andrew Bash delivered the walk-off winner with a bloop single. Bash provided one of four CBU hits in the bottom of ninth, with all four coming on two strikes.
"This is the type of the game you live for and look forward to every day," Bash said. "I just slowed it down at the plate, saw it and made it happen."
CBU improves to 4-1, with four-straight wins, and Colorado Christian drops to 2-4 going into the series finale Saturday at noon, back at Totman Stadium.
Logan Rinehart overcame a first, second and third inning to throw seven innings on the mound. He allowed five hits, one walk and struck out eight. Brody Robinson helped hold the Cougars to four runs when he threw a spotless inning where he didn't allow a base runner. Angel Delgado picked up the win after he recorded the final two outs of the ninth.
Down 4-2 going into the ninth, Tommy Bell gave CBU life when he lined a 2-2 single right past the pitcher's glove and into center field. Glenn then chopped a single through the right side on a 1-2 count to put two Lancers on with no outs.
A pitching change led to two quick outs for the Cougars, but Kyle Oyama gave CBU momentum again with a pinch-hit, full-count single into center field to score Bell and put Glenn at third. A throwing error on a pick-off attempt scored Glenn to tie the game, but the Lancers had no intentions of extra innings, as Bash delivered the game-winner on a 2-2 pitch.
"It started out tough, but once you get one guy going everyone else is going to string along and that's how we play as a team," Glenn said. "We were getting good barrel on the ball and we knew to trust what we were doing."
Offensively, the Lancers broke through in the seventh. Bell (2-for-4, two runs) led off the inning with a bloop single into center field and then Glenn blasted a homer well over the fence in right-center field to make it a 4-2 game.
"He threw me a first-pitch fastball in my first two at-bats, so when Bell got that hit I knew another first-pitch fastball was coming," Glenn said. "I just turned on it and hit it well."
