RIVERSIDE, Calif. – One of the most anticipated non-conference series of NCAA Division II this season did not disappoint when third-ranked Colorado Mesa visited No. 6 California Baptist University on Thursday night.
It took 13 innings to determine a winner, but unfortunately for the Lancers it went in the Mavericks' favor in a 7-5 CMU win at Totman Stadium. Colorado Mesa improves to 7-2 and the Lancers move to 5-2 this year. The series continues with a nine-and-nine-inning doubleheader on Friday starting at 3 p.m., with the series finale scheduled for a noon start on Saturday.
Not lost in the loss was a big night for Andrew Bash at the plate. The sophomore third baseman batted 3-for-6 with three runs batted in and two home runs. John Glenn also had three hits, and RBI and double for CBU, which received 2-for-6 games from Tommy Bell, Ryan Williams (homer) and a 2-for-5 night from Angelo Capolupo.
A quick-start offense and those three home runs helped the Lancers take an early lead and kept them in it the entire game on Thursday night. CBU scored in each of the first two innings for a 2-0 lead.
A five-pitch, lead-off walk to Billy Rockefeller and a Bell single set up Glenn for an RBI single for a 1-0 CBU lead in the first inning. In the second, Williams turned on the first pitch he saw and sent it way out to left field for a home run and 2-0 advantage.
Bell also had two great defensive plays in the outfield for CBU. His first came in right field when he cut down a Maverick at home plate with a great throw and then tag from the catcher, Bryce Macy. It held CMU to just one run in the third kept CBU up 2-1.
The Lancers got that run back and one more in the bottom of the third. An infield single from Macy led things off, and Bash promptly drove him in with a no-doubt homer to left center field.
CMU scratched out one more run before Justin Montgomery's night was done in the fourth to make it a 4-2 game. Montgomery allowed just two hits, two runs and struck out three through the first four innings.
Bash got the run back when he hit another long fly over the left field fence to make it 5-2. The Mavericks showed their mettle and kept coming back to score three-straight runs, with two runs in the sixth and one in the eighth, to tie things up 5-5 to force extra innings.
On the mound, Andrew Bernstein turned in a strong 6.1 innings on the mound where he struck out six and allowed just one earned run. Jorge Valerio was impressive on the mound for CBU to keep his team in the game.
Valerio was called upon in the biggest of moments with one out and two runners in scoring position in the top of the 11th. The true freshman got the Lancers out of the jam unscathed with a strikeout and grounder to second base. Valerio overcame a two-out error again in the 12th to strand a Maverick at second base.
Colorado Mesa would eventually put across two runs in the 13th on three hits and two walks to take the 7-5 lead and then the game.
