CLAREMONT, Calif. – Day one of the Claremont Convergence was an even split for California Baptist University on Friday. The 23rd-ranked Lancers blew out Occidental in their first game of the weekend, 15-2, and then fell to No. 10-ranked UC San Diego, 12-5.
CBU moves to 7-9 on the year, while the Tigers drop to 0-5 and the Tritons improve to 10-9. The Lancers play two more games on Saturday, facing Pomona-Pitzer at 11:40 a.m. and Villanova at 3:40 p.m.
Three true freshmen enjoyed career days on Friday. Amy Branch logged three goals, an assist and steal versus Occidental. Two-meter Vickie Ochoa scored a career-high two goals and drew three exclusions against the Tritons, while Krista Krantz had three points with a goal and two assists in the game for the most impressive performances of their young careers.
Depth was key for the Lancers in their win over the Tigers, with 10 players scoring in the game. Lizette Perez and Annie Eubanks both logged five points on two goals and three assists in the game. Eubanks added three steals and a drawn exclusion to her stat line, while Branch had those three goals, an assist and steal. Katie Quon logged three points (goal, two assists), while Allie Coleman had a goal and assist, as well.
Maddie Meza, Catie Kaliszewski, Madison Gonzales, Coleman and Morgan Baker all had two steals, as well. True freshman Victoria Reardon picked up the first win of her collegiate career with six saves and an assist in the cage.
Both teams traded goals to start the game, with Kira O'Donell notching the first goal of the game just 14 seconds in for CBU. The Tigers responded on the next possession to tie things, but the Lancers scored the next eight goals to put the game out of reach.
Perez scored twice in that span, with six other Lancers: Ochoa, Quon, Branch, Pua Wong, Krantz and Coleman scoring in the run. Occidental scored with 1:29 left in the second quarter to make it 9-2 CBU at halftime.
The Lancers played everyone and did not slow down in the second half, with Baker, Eubanks and Branch all scoring twice in the third and fourth quarters to cap the scoring at 15-2.
Grace Ramirez logged a season-high 14 saves and three steals against UC San Diego. In addition to Ochoa's two goals, Krantz had three points with a goal and two assists, while Perez had a goal and two drawn ejections and O'Donell picked up two assists. Quon also scored and Coleman had four steals on the Tritons.
CBU won the fourth quarter on a 3-1 run over UCSD, as Perez, Krantz and Ochoa scored in the final eight minutes to cut down the deficit.
