FRESNO, Calif. -- A doubleheader sweep secured California Baptist University a PacWest series win over Fresno Pacific on Friday, with one game left to be played.
The 24th-ranked Lancers in NCAA Division II won the first game of the day 1-0 and then took the nightcap 7-1. CBU improves to 24-13, 17-10 in the PacWest and FPU drops to 15-18, 12-15. The series ends Saturday at noon.
Andrew Bash put together a great start on the mound for CBU in Friday's opener. The redshirt sophomore struck out 10 Sunbirds and allowed just six base runners (four hit, two walks) and retired the side in order in the sixth and seventh innings.
It was a pitcher's duel through and through, with the Lancers scoring the one and only run in the fourth inning. A hit by pitch to John Glenn and a Bash single started the inning and a one-hit single from Ryan Williams loaded the bases.
DJ Porter brought in the run with a fielder's choice grounder to second base. Luke Navigato, Tommy Bell and Rory Smith also had base hits in the game for the Lancers.
Brody Robinson and Logan Rinehart kept the shutout intact after coming on from the bullpen. Robinson came on after a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth. He threw two strikes before inducing a popup to shortstop for a strong hold. Rinehart logged his second save of the year by allowing just one single in the bottom of the ninth.
In the doubleheader finale, Dylan Stowell also struck out 10 batters through 6.2 innings on the mound where he allowed six hits, three walks and one run. Chris Burica made his CBU debut and struck out his one and only batter, as well.
Four Lancers logged two hits on Friday night, as well. Bell and Nick Plaia both went 2-for-4, with Bell hitting a three-run homer, while Ryan Mota and Williams were each 2-for-3.
CBU scored twice in the top of the second, with Glenn and Williams getting on board with a hit by pitch and single, respectively. Angelo Capolupo then drove both in with a two-out single.
Mota then led off the fourth with a homer before a Capolupo single and sacrifice bunt from Navigato set up an RBI single from Bash in the fifth. Bell then put the exclamation mark on the win when his three-run homer in the seventh for a 7-0 lead.
