BOX SCORE
LOS ANGELES – When it faced a two-goal deficit with less than three minutes to play, California Baptist University rallied around its five seniors to force overtime and eventually defeat Fresno State, 13-10 at the Golden Coast Conference Championships on Sunday.
CBU finished the game on a 5-0 run, including a 3-0 advantage in overtime. The 22nd ranked and sixth-seeded Lancers finish the season with a 17-17 record and handed the 23rd-ranked, fifth-seeded Bulldogs a 7-18 record. It was payback for a 6-5, comeback win Fresno State got over the Lancers on their Senior Day last week.
"It was fun, it was definitely the game you want to end with — exciting, overtime, everyone scoring," said Jaclyn Myers, a senior, of her final collegiate game. "I don't know, I think it's the way seniors want to end their season."
Junior driver Lizette Perez put together a game for the ages with three goals, four assists, two steals and two drawn power plays, including a five-meter penalty. It helped Perez make the GCC Championships All-Tournament Team after she had 10 points (four goals, six assists), three drawn ejections, three steals and three field blocks on the week. Freshman attacker Kira O'Donell also had three goals, two assists, two steals and two drawn elections for the Lancers, who received seven saves and two steals from goalie Grace Ramirez.
CBU received huge contributions from its quintet of seniors, as well. Annie Eubanks scored and assisted in the game, forced three steals and drew three ejections; Myers scored twice and Allie Coleman had four points on three assists and netted the tying goal that sent things into overtime. Jocelyn Schwegler had an assist and played tremendous defense on the Bulldog centers, along with Myers, while Amy Bideshi gave the Lancers a big shot of energy when she came in the game to help close out the win.
"I have never seen so many people step up. It was just amazing to see my team come together and play so well," Eubanks said. "Honestly, [the game] started really emotional in the beginning and the rest of the time I felt like I was on a crazy emotional roller coaster."
The Lancers held a 4-2 lead in the first half, but the Bulldogs came back just like they did in their regular season matchup. Ties were forced at four, five, six and seven before the Bulldogs scored consecutive goals for a 9-7 lead with 4:33 left in the fourth quarter.
Vickie Ochoa made it a one-goal game, 9-8, with 3:03 to play but the Bulldogs got another insurance goal with 2:54 remaining. Even when their chances looked bleak, CBU's seniors rallied the team together for one more run in 2018.
"I was telling the team, 'No excuses, we are going to play through everything,'" Myers said. "I never really had a doubt in my mind, which sounds crazy. Even though we were down by two, I was like, 'No, we are going to win this game, we have to win this game.'"
While Myers had no doubt, Eubanks admitted there were some nerves for her down the stretch, but her team helped calm them.
"Honestly, I was so scared. I personally threw away some bad possessions and I was scared I was going to cost us the game," Eubanks said. "I told the team, 'I need you guys to come in clutch because I cannot be the reason why we lose.' From that moment, the team came in, had my back and it was awesome."
Perez helped provide the response the Lancers desperately needed in the final minutes. Down two with less than two minutes left, she scored after drawing an ordinary foul to make it a 10-9 deficit with 1:44 left in regulation.
The Bulldogs took possession and called timeout at the 1:20 mark. The play they drew up was canceled out by a field block from Madison Gonzales. CBU drew an ejection on the other end and then called timeout with 42 seconds left.
The Lancers ran the power play to perfection, as Coleman netted the tying goal off a Perez assist with 31 seconds remaining. Fresno State had a shot at the win in regulation, but it was off the mark to give CBU all the momentum going into the fourth quarter.
A steal from Eubanks early into overtime put the Lancers on the counter attack. O'Donell sprinted back and drew an ejection on the one defender between her and the goalie. She gathered the ball, composed herself and then beat the goalie with a skip shot at the near post for an 11-10 CBU lead.
In the second overtime session, Myers gave the Lancers a huge two-goal lead with 2:13 to go with one of her patented lobs placed perfectly in the cage.
"The seniors came together and said no matter what just enjoy [the final minutes], win or lose we are going to enjoy it," Myers said. "The happiness kind of took over and we were just cheering for each other; no matter what, we were going to win."
Eubanks assisted on Myers' goal and then scored her own to put the game out of reach, as the Lancers pulled ahead 13-10 with 1:30 remaining.
"This was all I could ask for as a senior," Eubanks said. "It was great to see all the seniors contributing a lot. At first, I thought I was only going to have two more minutes of water polo left, but we went into overtime [and thought,] 'Awesome, six more minutes of water polo.' I know our seniors wanted to win and we got six more minutes to prove we were the better team."
It was an all-around team effort, with seven different scorers and an assist on each goal in the game. Center play helped the Lancers grab an early lead, as Pua Wong had a goal and an assist, while Ochoa finished with two goals, a drawn ejection and a steal.
