BOX SCORE
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – One of the best defensive performances in program history and a fourth-quarter surge nearly led California Baptist University to a big Golden Coast Conference win on the road at San Diego State on Thursday.
CBU held the 21st-ranked Aztecs to the fewest amount of goals the program has ever given up to a ranked team in the NCAA (Divisions I-III), but saw its fourth-quarter comeback fall just short, 3-2. The No. 23 Lancers' offense came alive in the fourth quarter and won the final eight minutes on a 2-0 score.
The Lancers move to 14-14, 2-2 in the GCC and SDSU improves to 11-13, 3-1. CBU continues GCC play with a noon game at 16th-ranked Loyola Marymount on Saturday.
In addition to being the fewest goals the Lancers have held a top-25 ranked team to, Thursday was also tied for the lowest-scoring game in CBU history. It only happened one other time when CBU defeated Harvard, 3-2, on March 30, 2005.
Both goalies were excellent on Thursday, with Grace Ramirez posting a save percentage of .769 with 10 blocks in the game. Maura Cantoni came up big for the Aztecs with 11 saves and a steal.
Lizette Perez scored both Lancer goals in the fourth quarter and also had two steals and a drawn ejection. Jocelyn Schwegler added an assist, while Vickie Ochoa notched three drawn ejections and a steal. Annie Eubanks also had a steal and created a power play for the Lancers.
Each offense was kept off balance as a result, with no goals coming in the first 7:46 of the game until SDSU broke through with 14 seconds left in the first quarter. The Aztecs increased their lead to 3-0 with a goal at the 4:44 and 5:43 marks of the second and third quarters, respectively.
CBU showed no quit, especially after it overcame a four-goal deficit in a 9-8 win over Azusa Pacific last week. The Lancers drew an exclusion on its first possession of the fourth quarter and Lizette Perez came through with the goal to make it 3-1 with 7:16 to play.
Perez kept working and scored again with 1:30 remaining to give the Lancers a shot at victory in the win. CBU was just kept out of the cage to end the game.
