Lancers Get Train Rolling Vs. Biola

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Two timely home runs and a dominant day from California Baptist University's pitching staff helped the Lancers defeat Biola, 3-1, and deliver the PacWest series win, as well on Saturday.
Sophomore pitchers Andrew Bash and Logan Rinehart combined to hold the talented Eagles just one unearned run and six hits on Saturday. The Lancers' offense also managed to hand Biola ace and reigning PacWest Pitcher of the Week Micah Beyer his first loss of the season (5-1).
CBU improves to 21-13 to move up to third place in the PacWest with a 14-10 conference record, while Biola drops to 21-13, 13-11. It ends the Lancers' 12-game homestand, as they will travel to Fresno Pacific next week and then take on top-ranked Azusa Pacific on the road the week after that.
"It was a good team win in this series. We were able to put it all together," Rinehart said. "We've been searching for our identity as a team and what we needed to do to get the train rolling and we really found it this weekend."
Bash continued to get it done in all phases for the Lancers by also hitting third in the order while getting the start on the mound. He went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth that gave Rinehart an insurance run he never needed for the ninth.
"It's huge, you don't want to think bad thoughts on the mound but you know getting that insurance run means if you give up a bomb you're ok in the ninth," Rinehart said. "It was a great swing by Bash and he's been doing that all year."
Rinehart was dynamic on the mound and got the win after he allowed just one base runner (hit) and struck out four over the final 3.2 innings. Bash turned in a quality 5.1 innings on the mound, allowing five hits, two walks, an unearned run and striking out five.
It was Tommy Bell who gave CBU the go-ahead run with a solo homer in the sixth. It ended six-pitch at bat, as Bell turned on a hanging slider and launched it over the glove of the left fielder who attempted to make a highlight-reel catch at the fence.
"I just wanted to get a pitch to handle," Bell said. "I fouled off a few and he left a slider hanging over the plate and I got a good swing on it."
Bell's blast broke a 1-1 tie created in the bottom of the fifth. Biola scored first in the third inning, but the Lancers rallied back to tie things on two big hits from Ryan Williams and Luke Navigato.
Williams started things out with a 1-2 double down the left-field line. Navigato then turned on the pitch he saw and sent it through the left side to score the speedy Williams easily from second.
"We wanted to see the ball up, we knew [Beyer] was a heavy-breaking ball guy," Bell said. "We had to stick to our approach and lock it down later in the game. We ended up scratching a couple of runs across and thankfully that was enough, the pitchers held it."
