MINNEAPOLIS – On a chilly morning at one of the premier events in collegiate cross country this weekend, California Baptist University stayed hot, proving that it is a premier program by finishing second at the Roy Griak Invitational.
The invite boasted a very talented field on Saturday with seven teams ranking in the top-15 in their respective regions: CBU (No. 14, West), Harvard (No. 13, Northeast), Minnesota (No. 2, Midwest), Northern Iowa (No. 9 Midwest), South Dakota (No. 4, Midwest), and South Dakota State (No. 12, Midwest). The hosting Golden Gophers also rank No. 23 in the NCAA.
CBU had a team total 82 points for the second-place finish. Minnesota claimed the top spot with a team total of 52 points. South Dakota (106), Harvard (115), and Montana State (133) took third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
"Very pleased with the ladies' runs today," said Coach Adam Tribble, whose Lancers have taken second at every meet this year. "They put out a great effort and were responsive and engaged throughout the race."
Anett Somogyi led the Lancers and took fifth place on Saturday with a time of 21 minute, 35.9 second on the 6-kilometer course. Anna Mate finished 16th, clocking in at 21:51.3. Lara Orrock, Fruzsi Ladanyi and Karolina Iznerowicz finished within two seconds of one another to take 20th, 22nd and 23rd, respectively. Maria Guerrero (22:31.2, 44th), Emilie Renaud (22:40.7, 51st) and Chloe Sharp (23:22.8, 81st) rounded out the noteworthy day for the Lancers.
"For us having five women in the top-23, we have to be pleased with it," said Tribble. "I think our women's team is a top-30 national team."
The Lancers return to action on October 13 for the UCR Highlander Invite, the last race of the season before the Western Athletic Conference championship meet.
