RIVERSIDE, Calif. – California Baptist University competed in both the Arturo Barrios Invitational at Texas A&M and the UCR Highlander Invitational Saturday. A majority of Lancer runners traveled to Texas and took fifth as a team in a talented field.
The Arturo Barrios Invitational essentially served as a preview for the South Central Regional Championship, with nine of the South Central Region's top-15 teams represented in the field. In total, 15 teams in the field are ranked in their respective region's top-15, including No. 29-ranked Oklahoma State, an SMU squad that received votes in the latest NCAA DI poll, and fellow Western Athletic Conference (WAC) member The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
"I thought today was a good experience for the girls," said Coach Adam Tribble. "Being in a very good and deep field in a new region, with definitely new weather, will only help them going forward."
The Lancers tallied 186 points for a fifth-place finish in the 6-kilometer event. Florida (46 points; South Region No. 11), Oklahoma State (85 points), Vanderbilt (138 points; South Region No. 5), and Texas (156 points; South Central Region No. 3) took first through fourth place, respectively.
Anna Mate (12th) was the first CBU runner to cross the finish line with a time of 20 minutes, 57.8 seconds. Lara Orrock (21:38.8) placed 28th, just missing out on the top-25 by five seconds. Anett Somogyi (43rd, 21:53.2), Emilie Renaud (51st, 22:03.4) and Chloe Sharp (52nd, 22:04.3) finished out the CBU scoring five. Renaud and Sharp missed out on the top-50 by 1.4 and 2.3 seconds, respectively. Karolina Iznerowicz (63rd, 22:15.4) and Fruzsi Ladanyi (69th, 21:14.7) rounded out the Lancer runners to cross the finish line in College Station, Texas.
"It was a good run by Anna and progress for Chloe, but all in all, we were hoping for a bit more," stated Tribble.
Back in Riverside, Natalia Novak was the top CBU runner at the UCR Highlander Invitational with a time of 18:26.3, finishing 55th overall. Mary Andrews (89th, 19:04.7) and Allison Janes (125th, 19:39.3) both set PRs in the 5-kilometer event.
The Lancers close out the season at the WAC Championship in Seattle on October 27.
