CHICAGO - Senior Jordan Heading scored 24 points as California Baptist picked up its first Western Athletic Conference road win with a 77-75 victory at Chicago State on Saturday afternoon.
Neither team had a larger lead than seven points in the back and forth contest that was tied 11 separate times along with 16 lead changes.
Chicago State held a 9-6 lead four minutes into the game when CBU sophomore Milan Acquaah hit a three pointer from deep to jump start an 8-0 run for the Lancers. Sophomore Mike Henn capped the run with a three pointer of his own, making it 14-9 with 11:12 left in the first half.
With Chicago State holding a 75-74 lead, Davis pulled down a crucial rebound off of a missed layup by Shaw with 20 seconds left. Acquaah quickly advanced the ball down the floor finding an open Rowell near the corner. Rowell connected on what became the game-winning shot, giving the Lancers a 77-75 lead with 11.1 seconds remaining.
The Cougars would have a chance at heroics, but the CBU defense was able to force a difficult shot with the rebound being tipped around by both teams until time expired.
Heading finished with seven rebounds, two assists and a steal along with his 24 points. Acquaah tallied 16 points, eight assists, six rebounds and a steal while Rowell scored 14 points. Davis pulled down a game-high 10 boards along with his seven points.
Harris scored 24 points and pulled down nine rebounds for Chicago State. Christian Jacob and Shaw added 20 and 14 points, respectively.
The Lancers improved to 10-7 overall and 2-2 in the WAC while Chicago State fell to 3-14 overall and 0-2 in conference play. CBU has won eight of its last 11 games. Entering today's game, CBU was one of only 48 NCAA Division I teams with four or more true road wins.
The Lancers will travel back to Riverside for an 11-day break. CBU will host CSU Bakersfield on Jan. 24 and Grand Canyon on Jan. 26.
