LAS CRUCES --- California Baptist University closed out the final round of the NM State Aggie Invitational posting the third-lowest score on the day, as the Lancers finished the three-day tournament in sixth.
The 17-team field finished the third and final round of the NM State Aggie Invitational on Wednesday, as host NM State won the event with a 3-under-par 861 team score. "I liked the fight and heart that this TEAM showed this tournament, especially in the final round," said head coach Marc Machado. "When our backs are up against the wall, this group seems to rise to the occasion. It was nice to have the third-lowest final round today, and it was great to see the overall score improvement each round."
Kristyna Abrahamova and Sofia Chabon finished inside the top-20, as Abrahamova led the Lancers with a 76-73-74=223 to place T-16th. Chabon recorded a 76-74-76=226 to finish behind Abrahamova at T-19th.
"Kristyna had a very solid tournament, and I'm proud of how she finished off each round," said Machado. "Her cumulative score for her last four holes for the entire tournament was 1-under-par."
Jocelyn Chee made the second biggest climb up the leaderboard during the final round, firing off a 1-over-par 73 to jump up 17 spots and take T-23rd. Chee finished her three days with a 76-78-73=227.
Samantha Martirez also made a move up the leaderboard by 11 spots to place T-29th. Martirez followed up her two rounds of 77 with a 3-over-par 75 on the day.
Diana Araneta continued her climb on the final day, moving up a team-best 23 spots to finish inside the top-50 at T-47th. Araneta signed an 82-78-73=233.
Amelia McKee of NM State made the dramatic comeback to claim the individual medalist honors, shooting a 5-under-par 69 to edge the field of 100 golfers by four strokes.
"We saved our best for last, and now our goal is to get off to a faster start in the next tournament in Arkansas, so we don't put ourselves too far behind the start," added Machado. We have a good mindset and are close to breaking through. It's just a matter of time before this TEAM truly starts to believe in themselves."
CBU will close out its fall schedule with another three-day tournament in Hot Spring Village, Arkansas, at the Little Rock Golf Classic on Oct. 27-29.
