Lancers Secure Second WAC Sweep in Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD – A balanced performance offensively and defensively led California Baptist University to its second Western Athletic Conference sweep in three matches on Saturday at CSU Bakersfield.
The Lancers made a big statement with a dominant victory in the first set, and never let up in the 25-12, 25-20, 25-20 win. CBU held the Roadrunners to a .071 attacking percentage (29-22-98), with advantages of 41-31 in digs and 7-5 in blocks.
CBU improves to 12-14 and 6-7 in the WAC, while CSUB drops to 8-17, 3-11. Sydney Marks led the offense, which hit .293 (40-13-92) overall, with a match-high 11 kills. Cassidy Dennison and Christine Graf both logged eight kills. Graf hit .500 (8-1-14), while Dennison attacked a .316 clip (8-2-19) and Marks also hit .375 (11-2-24).
Nicole Abreu and Yagoda Jedrzejczak spearheaded the defense with 15 digs and five blocks, respectively. Graf also had four blocks for the Lancers. CBU received seven digs, five kills, two blocks and an ace from Elizabeth Gilley, who played in the 405th set of her career.
A 7-0 run early in the first set gave CBU momentum immediately on Saturday. Jedrzejczak had a kill and block in that span, while Gilley added a kill. The Lancers used another 6-0 charge fueled by two kills from Marks and Dennison, to take a 19-7 lead en route to the 25-12 win.
Set two was much closer, with CBU leading by just one late, 19-18. The Lancers then closed out the game on a 6-2 run. A pair of blocks from Jedrzejczak and a kill and combo block from Gilley sparked the final run.
The Lancers jumped to an 8-2 lead in the final set, with the help of three blocks and three points each from Dennison and Jedrzejczak. CBU never gave up the lead from there. When CSU Bakersfield did pull within 22-19 late, the Lancers ended the match on a 3-1 run with the help of two kills from Marks.
CBU stays on the road for a match at Grand Canyon on Monday at 5 p.m. Pacific. The Lancers then play their final three regular-season matches in Riverside.
First, they host Utah Valley for Senior Day on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. and then conclude their home season against Seattle U Sunday at 2 p.m. The regular-season finale will be played at UC Riverside on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m.
