RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A strong finish secured seventh place for California Baptist University at UC Riverside's Battle at the Rock at Oak Quarry Golf Club on Tuesday.
A six-over-par 294 in the third round was the Lancers' best of the week, as it totaled an 892 (297-301-294) to take seventh. Reigning Western Athletic Conference champion Grand Canyon won the event with an 881. Cal Poly (882), Santa Clara (883), Gonzaga (886), Hawaii (887) and Nevada (889) rounded out second through sixth place, as CBU was just seven shots off the top four.
The Lancers got head-to-head wins over host CSUN (eighth, 893); UC Riverside (ninth, 898); Wyoming (10th, 900); Utah Valley of the WAC (11th, 910); Boise State (12th, 914); Montana State (13th, 936); Montana (14th, 950) and the WAC's CSU Bakersfield (15th, 976).
"I am very proud o the team and how they finished their last four holes in round three today," Coach Marc Machado said. "For the four counting scores, we played our last four holes at even par and that definitely helped us jump up a few spots in the closing stretch."
Yifei "Sunny" Wang was CBU's top finisher in 12th place with a 220 (70-75-75), but Erica Wang had the best day on Tuesday. Wang jumped 17 spots up the individual leaderboard with a final round of two-under-par 70 for a 224 total (78-76-70).
"Sunny was a bright spot for us this tournament. She had been struggling in qualifying but she is the type of player that brings fierce focus and is a true competitor. I knew she would rise to the occasion. This is a great start for her spring, she has the capability to win an NCAA Division I tournament this spring," Machado said.
"Erica really bounced back from her first-round struggles and closed with a solid 70. She has been our leader on and off the course for awhile and it's such a joy to see her overcome obstacles and continue to trust the process."
Samantha Martirez took 36th place for the Lancers with a 226 (75-76-75), while Sharon Oh gave CBU four golfers who shot at least 75 on Tuesday. Oh took 45th with a 230 (74-81-75). Kristyna Abrahamova finished 51st for the Lancers (231, 80-74-77).
"Sharon was key contributor for the team in rounds one and three," Machado said. "It was fun to have all three seniors in the lineup and helping the team."
Diana Araneta took 69th with a 237 (79-80-77), with her last round being her strongest, as well. The Lancers next head to the Grand Canyon Spring Invite Feb. 23-24 in Phoenix.
