HOUSTON – A pair of top-six finishes in both relays highlighted day one of California Baptist University's first-ever Western Athletic Conference Championships on Wednesday at the CRWC Natatorium.
Through three events, CBU stands in seventh place with 62 points. There is plenty of opportunity for the Lancers to move up, with three days left. Northern Arizona leads with 133 points, while Idaho (97), NM State (89), Northern Colorado (72), Grand Canyon (66) and CSU Bakersfield (64) round out the top six. Seattle U is in eighth with 44 points.
"There's plenty of time to rally, we will make up points in individual events and with our depth," Coach Rick Rowland said. "We just have to take it one day at a time."
There was little separation between third and sixth place in the 200-yard medley relay, with CBU's Andrea Laliena, Robin Smallwood, Emily Longfellow and Isabella Rhodes taking sixth place in one minute, 42.66 seconds. There was just over a second between them and third place (1:41.59).
Rebeca Oviedo, Alina Jungklaus, Kylie Morrison and Grace Oeser put CBU in the lead about 200 yards into the 800-free relay. The strong opening position helped them secure sixth place in 7:29.70, which was not far off the CBU record of 7:29.14.
Emily Dunkerson secured a top-10 finish on the 3-meter board. After missing out on the championships by just .05 of a point, the senior won the consolation final to take ninth place with 258.80 points.
Savannah Uhlir qualified for the consolation final before taking 16th with a 220.15, while Kiree Lowe (194.25) and Janae Jizmejian (186.90) took 18th and 19th, respectively.
Preliminary competition will begin at 8:30 a.m. Pacific, with the finals beginning at 4 p.m. each day this week. Live stats will be available throughout the week for both swimming and diving. There will be video of diving and swimming prelims on the WAC's Facebook, with the finals being streamed on the WAC Digital Network. For more information, visit the WAC Championship Central.
