Offenses Dominate Series Opener

A total of 31 runs were scored in a 21-10 Sacramento State victory. It was the highest scoring Lancer home game this season by the end of the fourth inning, and was tied for the second highest-scoring game CBU has ever played at Totman Stadium since it was built in 2007. Friday night was the first time two teams combined to score 30 or more runs at Totman since May 11, 2010 when the Lancers defeated Vanguard 26-10.
Andrew Bash and Nick Plaia both went 3-for-4 in the game, with Bash driving four runs and Plaia adding two runs batted in. Chad Castillo and Luke Navigato each went 2-for-5 with two RBI, two runs and a double.
The Lancers move to 17-9, 2-2 in the WAC, while Sacramento State improves to 18-8, 3-1. The series continues with a 5 p.m. game on Saturday and then wraps up with a noon game on Sunday. Fans can follow the rest of the series with live stats and video at CBULancers.com/live.
It became clear from the get go that Friday would be a slugfest. The Hornets took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first and then the Lancers tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a three-run homer from Bash that came after a Navigato double.
Sacramento State went up big, 10-3, through three-and-a-half innings, but it was anything but a comfortable lead. Rory Smith started the rally with a full-count walk and 0-2 single, respectively. Plaia and Castillo then hit back-to-back RBI doubles to bring the score to 10-5.

Navigato drove in both Plaia and Castillo with a 2-2 single to left field and then Bash chased home Navigato with a two-strike double to left to make it a one-run game, 10-9.

A lead-off walk to Smith led to another Lancer rally and tie game, 10-10, in the bottom of the fifth. Plaia scored Smith with a single to right field, and the Castillo tied the game with an RBI single to center.
