RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A breakout game from Damon Keith highlighted a back-and-forth game between California Baptist University and the University of San Diego on Tuesday night at Totman Stadium.

There were two ties and two lead changes, and the Lancers put the go-ahead run on second base in the bottom of the ninth but came up one run short in a 5-4 loss. Keith finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs batted in, while Rory Smith also went 2-for-4 for the Lancers.

CBU moves to 23-13 and San Diego improves to 23-14, with the Lancers going into a crucial Western Athletic Conference series at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Thursday through Saturday. The Vaqueros are in a three-way tie for first place in the WAC at 9-3 in league and 23-12 overall, while CBU is a game back at 8-4.

The Toreros took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, with a hit, an error and a pair of sacrifice flies doing the damage. Angel Delgado settled down to give CBU a good start on the mound, giving up just one hit, one walk and the one earned run over the first four innings.

The Lancers got on the board in the bottom of the inning. John Glenn started things off with an infield single and then scored from second on a two-out RBI single from Keith.

CBU erupted for four hits and three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead over the Toreros. Smith got the rally started with a one-out single up the middle, and then back-to-back doubles from Nick Plaia and Keith gave the Lancers an edge.

The Lancers weren't done, though, as an RBI single from Harrison Spohn made it a 4-2 lead going into the fifth.

The Toreros tied the game with two runs in the top of the fifth and took a 5-4 lead with another in the sixth. Bryan Pope kept it a one-run game when called on out of the bullpen with a 2-1 count, two outs and the bases loaded.

Both pitches Pope threw were swing-and-miss strikes that ended the inning and kept it a one-run game. Matt Amrhein also threw three shutout innings and struck out three in relief for CBU.
