RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- On a windy Thursday afternoon, California Baptist University's women's soccer team opened its 2019 season with a 3-0 shutout win over the Crusaders of Holy Cross.
"We wanted to set the tone right from kickoff and start the season off the right way," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "We had some nerves in the first half, but overall, the team did a nice job of responding in the second half and executing when they needed to."
The game was initially scheduled to play on campus at the Lancer Soccer Field, but with unforeseen issues with the field, the game was moved to the SilverLakes Soccer Complex in Norco.
The move didn't seem to be an issue for the Lancers, though, as Rola Badawiya kicked off the season with a goal at the 8th minute. Karley Weeks put a shot on frame, and the Crusaders' keeper did well to stop the shot, but the ball came loose, leaving Badiwaya to put a low ball on the left side in the back of the net.
The rest of the half came down to possession, as the Lancers and the Crusaders battled in the middle of the field for control.
CBU was able to keep the ball on the offensive end for most of the first half, rattling off nine shots to keep the pressure on the Crusaders.
With Badiwaya's goal on the scoreboard, the Lancers went into the break with a 1-0 lead. CBU outshot the Crusaders, 9-6, and recorded four corners to the Crusaders one.
After the break, the Lancers came out hungry looking to add to their total. It didn't take long, either, as Amy Aquino made a nice move past her defender to create a 1-on-1 with the goalie. With open-space around her, Aquino placed the ball in the bottom left corner to give the Lancers a 2-0 lead at the 55th minute.
Jordan Dow provided the icing on the cake six minutes later, as the senior striker put one in the back of the net after a double assist by Weeks and Camille Ramirez.
"We wanted to get the nerves out of the way and play to our potential tonight," said Dow. "We meshed really well in the second half and showed a lot of resilience as the game went on. I'm proud of the team and how we played tonight. It was a lot of fun to be back on the field."
Abigail Tyhurst secured the complete-game shutout for the Lancers, going all 90 minutes between the sticks and grabbing two saves.
With the win, the Lancers move to 1-0 on the season.
"We will enjoy this win tonight, but tomorrow our focus will shift to UCR on Sunday," added St. Clair.
CBU turns right around to hit the road for the Crosstown Showdown at UC Riverside on Sunday, with the game set for 7:30 p.m.
