RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- In the first-ever regular-season Crosstown Showdown, the California Baptist University women's soccer team beat the Highlanders of UC Riverside, 3-1.
"We wanted to continue to focus on the things we could control, and the team did a great job of that tonight," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "I thought our grit and our heart were outstanding. We showed a lot of maturity tonight for a young team."
With only 7.8 miles separating the two schools, it came as a surprise this marked the first-ever 'counting' game between the Lancers and the Highlanders.
CBU did well to keep the Highlanders off the board early, as the home team rattled off two quick shots on goal.
The Lancers went on the attack moments later, as Erin Gallagher found Amy Aquino downfield with her defender behind her. Aquino delivered a well-placed ball to the lower right corner, beating the Highlanders' keeper for the first goal of the game.
The Highlanders had an opportunity for the equalizer with five minutes left in the first half, but Abigail Tyhurst and the Lancers' back-line managed to keep UCR off the board.
The Lancers went into the break leading, 1-0.

Coming out of halftime, the Highlanders wasted no time evening the game up with a goal at the 48th minute.
It only took the Lancers two minutes to respond, though, as Elisa Soderholm buried a ball in the top left corner of the net at the 50th minute. Soderholm found herself in position after the Highlanders tried to kick it out of the box.
"We came out really strong tonight and played with a lot of heart," said Soderholm. "We stuck to our game plan and were able to win a lot of 1-on-1 battles. I'm proud of how we stayed strong in the second half and responded after they scored."
Ari Coronado helped put the game away for the Lancers, as the sophomore forward found the back of the net off a rebound from the keeper.
CBU managed to dig in for the rest of the game, beating the Highlanders, 3-1. Tyhurst went all 90 minutes in the net, recording a season-high five saves and her second win of the season.
