RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- The California Baptist women's soccer team hosted UNLV on the Lancer Soccer Field on Friday, dropping the match, 2-0.
"This was a good learning opportunity for our team," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "Every game will take all 90 minutes of our best effort, and the margin for error is small. We were not as sharp as we needed to be in the first half, but the team did a nice job of responding in the second half."
The Lancers started the first half on the attack, as Jordan Dow put an early shot on frame five minutes into the game. The Rebels relied on playing transition soccer, switching the field with ease and forcing the Lancers to adjust to defense quickly.
UNLV scored its first goal at the 16-minute mark after McKenna Sullivan found the back of the net from a Taylor Clark assist.
The Rebels were able to add to their total eight minutes later after a foul was called on the Lancers giving UNLV a penalty kick. Katie Ballou picked the right side and put the Rebels up 2-0 after 24 minutes of action.
The Lancers went into the half down 2-0.
CBU found its offense in the second half, outshooting UNLV, 10-4. In fact, the Lancers outshot the Rebels, 16-12, during regulation.
The closest attempts came by Karley Weeks with a minute apart from each other. Her first attempt skimmed the top of the crossbar to miss just high, while her second looked good from distance but also sailed just high.
Badawiya led the Lancers on the day with a team-high five shots, three on frame.
"We came very close in the second half with multiple chances," added St. Clair. "We will learn from this and apply and move on. Every win, loss, and tie is a learning experience for this group. Our focus now shifts to Southern Utah."
The Lancers will look to bounce back with a road game against Southern Utah on Sunday at 12 p.m. (PST).
