CEDAR CITY, Utah --- In a complete defensive battle, the California Baptist University women's soccer team came away with a 1-0 victory over Southern Utah on Sunday.
"Today was about grit and maturity as a team," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "Playing on the road is always difficult, regardless of who you play. However, after a tough game on Friday then turning around to travel eight hours for a road game, our fatigue showed today. Our performance wasn't pretty, but credit to our young team and our senior leadership for a gritty performance and we'll take the result."
With the win, the Lancers record their third clean sheet on the season and improve to 3-1 overall.
Both the Lancers and the Thunderbirds were stingy on defense, forcing their respective backlines up to keep the runs to a minimum.
The Lancers did well keeping the pressure on the Thunderbirds, recording seven corner kicks in the opening 20 minutes of play.
CBU's eighth corner kick proved to be the difference-maker. Karley Weeks placed a ball into the Thunderbirds' box, giving the Lancers possession and resetting the offense near midfield. The Lancers were quick to put a high ball back in the box, and SUU's keeper came out to grab it, but the ball came loose, finding Ari Coronado, who fired the shot into the back of the net.

Coronado's goal would hold, giving the Lancers a 1-0 lead at the half.
The second half came down to defense.
The Thunderbirds threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Lancers, but the backline of Erin Gallagher, Brodi Blomdahl, Elisa Soderholm, and Cora Jacoby frustrated the home team.
The Lancers ended the game outshooting the T-Birds, 19-12, with only two of SUU's shots on goal.
CBU will stay on the road next week when they travel to Moraga, Calif., to play Saint Mary's on Sept. 6 at 3:30 p.m.
